Charlie, I figured someone would respond. I have one, maybe 2 types. The one I'm sure of has a hole that the stud goes thru and the ratchet attaches to a cam in the center of the tool. When you turn the ratchet it grips the stud and turns it at the same time. Kinda like a monkey wrench but closed ended.

I bought it for my rebuild, but I don't think I had to use it.

I wonder what your working on?

I'll be arround this weekend. Hope to make it to the drop on Sunday and off Monday. Sill have my numbers?

Forgot, I have a real torch if you want to use it. It might be easier to move the case if it's disassembled. I'll need the torch here as I hope to figure out what to do with my roll bar. Are you just replacing 1 stud or a bunch?

I was able to source one last night, not that I really needed it after all. I could have put a set of vise grips on those studs and removed them.

Charlie, that's what happened on my motor. I expected the worst so I bought the tool. Not needed. The studs had already been replaced with the fully threaded type. They were easily turned with double nuts.

One of the issues was that whoever installed them didn't have them all at the same height. Or, over time some worked loose. One was actually in so deep that one barrel nut had almost no threads to grab. It worked itself out. I did use locktight when re-installing them and got them at the right measurement. So I wonder why some are unbelievably tight and other's arn't. Mine are explainable because it probably wasn't loon since the last time it was opened up.

The project is coming along nicely. Should have the top-end, cams, SSI's, p-coat, and misc. parts, gaskets, etc all within the next few days, then rebuilding can resume. For now, just going through the CIS and cleaning bits.

BTW: Using OEM steel studs securing w/ blue loctite.
