Esteemed Dorki:
I have run Hawk Blues for years and am thinking of trying some Pagid Oranges this weekend. Have any of you run both (on the same car at different times) and if so what were your impressions of one versus the other? I know the hawk blues well and ran pagids eons ago ... different compounds were available at the time. Car + driver = 2,000 lbs. Some of my HSR competitors have taken to HBlues in front and POranges in back ... interesting... For larks, might try a pair of Ferodo DS11s which was the "the hot competition pad" back in the 1960s / 1970s ... found a set laying around in the race garage. (Operating temperature 840-1130F, coefficient of friction +/- 0.32). Think they'll hold up or simply ignite under heavy braking Jase |

With approximately the same weight, and having used all the pads you've mentioned, I honestly like the Hawks better. The Hawks seem much more consistent under braking and I have not yet cracked any rotors with them. At Watkin's a couple of years ago (with Pagid Orange) I cracked my two front rotors. I guess it could be that I scared myself with that discovery. So, off to the Hawks, and no repeat of cracked rotors. BTW, Willow Springs (my new "local" track) combines the speed of Watkins with the undulations of Mid-Ohio. This is offered as a comparison only.

Don N:
Thanks. I am going to give them a shot ... one shot ... and see if I like or want to stay with Hawk Blues. Several of the "under 2.0L" class guys I run with love the Oranges. Most of them are in 1800 - 2000lbs early 911 / 914s and probably have S calipers up front. Quote:

Don, when you say “cracked the rotors” are you talking cracked enough to feel miss-alignment as the brake is applied

Dave,
Heat build-up was (apparently) so intense that I indicated radial spider cracking along the face and into the webbing of the rotors. After that little discovery, the black grommet tightened up so tight, I coulda made diamonds. . . |

I'm running the blues on my 914 with huge Wilwood NASCAR calipers all around and Carrera slotted rotors and brake cooling. I just changed the rotors because of cracking to the edge from overheating. Rotors were barely worn with no groves or ripples. Looks like 2 sets of rotors to 1 set of pads. Good thing Carrera rotors are fairly cheap. Winter project looks like enlarging cooling ducts is on the list.
I've run PF 97?, Porterfield RS4, a couple others and like blues the best. |

Talk about using the brakes too much!

Double D, I seem to remember a young lady named Jana that complained I didn't use them enough? 8)

Nah, everyone knows I'm so slow that my best times are timed by a sundial. |

Don W. -- I don't think she will ever fully recover from that drive! Even riding around SP with Ivan didn't scare her that much
