Hi,
My '86 911 is currently in the shop awaiting a transmission rebuild. We're having problems locating a good solid re-buildable core. This was the final year for the 915, and as I understand, it was stronger than prior years, along with having some other unique aspects. If you know of any cores in good condition, I'd sure appreciate a heads-up. Thanks! Ray

The only difference I know of between the 86 915 and the earlier Carrera boxes is the output flanges/stub axles. All 86s had 10mm bolts on the stub axles. 85s are half and half and 84s have the earlier style 8mm bolts. Stub axles are changeable, so if you found an earlier transmission, you could bolt on the later stub axles and be fine.
IOW, you need to talk in terms of transmission number, not model year. For example, a late 85 box is the exact same unit as in your 86. Here are the potential transmissions out there: 1978/79 – 915/61 1980-83 USA – 915/63 1980-83 RoW - 915/62 1984-85.5 USA – 915/68 (USA Turbo Look – 915/70) 1984-85.5 RoW – 915/67 (RoW Turbo Look - 915/69) 1985.5-86 USA – 915/73 1985.5-86 RoW – 915/72 As far as I know, all of the core transmissions in the 915/68-915/73 range are identical. The differences in the specific models being the stub axles (67/68 have the older ones, 72/73 the newer) and 5th gear (I think RoW boxes have a taller 5th gear). So for a rebuild, any of these boxes would be fine.

What he said but just out of curiosity what's wrong with yours that makes it a non candidate for a rebuild?

Thanks for the info, Chris. It's an October 1985 build and a 915/73.
We originally thought it may just need new bearings but apparently it had experienced oil starvation at one point...mechanic feels a rebuild is necessary.

It's your money but a "core" is going to be $1K or more. Since short of a cracked case they all can be rebuilt. Or does you mechanic want some of the more exspensive shafts to reuse??

Actually, Helios is correct about the 1986 915. There is a part of the case that would get egged-out, and require a $1000 upgrade from WeVo to repair. That part was beefed up for 1986. Hoophead and I examined that on my transmission during our recent mild rebuild (replaced the 3-4 slider and synchs).
Hoophead?
