Rumor Mill: Porsche 928 Successor on the Way?

By Andrew Stoy

Posted by AutoWeek Wednesday, July 13, 2011 8:05:53 AM

Porsche is reportedly planning a spiritual successor to the front-engine, rear-drive 928 coupe, according to U.K. magazine Autocar.

The new grand tourer, which could wear the 929 nameplate, will be based on a shortened version of the Porsche Panamera platform and will be offered in both coupe and convertible body styles. All-wheel drive will also reportedly be an option.<!--EndofExcerptMarker-->

It's a little early, though, to dust off your copy of Risky Business and get on the horn to your local Porsche dealer. The report says the new Porsche 929 won't arrive until after the second-generation Panamera is launched. That puts the new GT in the 2015 or 2016 time frame.

The porsche coupe renderings/drawings/artist conceptions that existed the day the 4-door hit the mkt have looked pretty good. Very Aston/ferrari 5xx like.

Lucky for you Mark, beauty is in the eye of the beholder

You mean lucky for Porsche marketing. As an artist( one of my undergrad majors) IMO porsche has the 2 ugliest cars on the market today. Beyond that, the panamera is rediculouly small on the inside considering how large it is. Reminds me of the poor space management of GM products of the 80s.

Now if they would only offer it with a next-gen high rev low maintenance V4 with a front wheel drive and price point of $24K fully equipped with built in car seats for 3 mos to 9years old children, then I might be interested. Add no oil leaks to the requirement.

And, only Mark thinks the 928 was ugly and not a style setter. Of course 34 years ago he was still holding onto him mama leg and couldn't spell Porsche yet.

I'm with O'T on this the 928 was a good design. I'd disagree with Whimple even if I thought he was right... but as always he's welcome to his opinion even though he's wrong
