Default website hosting questions

As far the interwebs go, I know a little html, and the basics of maintaining a web page. I am looking to get my own domain name for personal stuff, cars, etc. anyone have good experiences with any particular vendor? What is the best software to design with(i do not want to code)? Best being a combination of low cost and ease of use, not most powerful.

tks

www.dreamhost.com - huge space, dead reliable, easy, cheap, google mail integration, etc. Just about everything you can ask for.

If you're just looking to do a bunch of pages, you probably can't go wrong w/ blog software like wordpress (if you can write a sytle sheet you can make it look very non-blog like if that sort of thing turns you off.) Very WYSIWYG. Look into the automated install programs on a place like dreamhost - there are several that would probably suit your needs. Joomla is another that pops to mind.

Of course, if you don't want your own domain you can get a free wordpress acct on wordpress.com. Though hosting wordpress somewhere like dreamhost give you unlimited creative control and your own domain name.

Some friends and I have used Verve (http://www.vervehosting.com/) for several sites for the last 5 years or so. They're inexpensive, reliable, and offer some decent options for hosting.

If I may suggest...if you're throwing up a site for your LeMons effort, I'd use a free blog package, like WordPress. Once you have it in place, it's really easy to maintain and requires next to zero html/web knowledge. Check out ours: http://www.doriftodogs.com

It's pretty out of date, but all the content from last year is still up.

Edit...Stephen beat me to the WordPress idea.

Alternative:

iWeb that is pre-loaded on any Mac.

I have ZERO ability to "sling code" but in about 15 minutes I had a 6 page website built from a template. Drag and drop. Very simple. I'm fine tuning now. Software lie this has got to hurt web site maker types. I was about to call someone and pay big money to make a site for me. Did it my self for free.

I have no doubt that the PC devoted will find issue with using the Mac but if you can cut and paste pictures and type you can build a website on the Mac. For bafoons like me it's the best answer.

Hosting at Godaddy.com. Mostly 'cause Danica is hot.

I used register.com to buy my domain, but then my web developer suggested I use www.hostingpad.com to host my site.....My site is www.midatlanticmotorclub.com . Good Luck w/ the search, I too was at a loss in the beginning and don't have much ability to build a page outside of FrontPage a few years back.

I use http://www.dyndns.com/ for domain registration, but they can be a tad pricey. However, they allow me to run some hobby sites from my basement via their custom dns service so I literally host my own and use a combination of my own storage and the space I get with my consumer Comcast account.

What do you want the site to be? What kind of content will it host? The suggestions above are all good for simple blogging, but they aren't the only choices even if you have limited html experience.

The real answer is, it depends on what you want to do.

I started using Site Ground (http://www.siteground.com/) a while back, and have been extremely happy with them. The price is impossibly low ($5.95/mo) when you realize the features available.

They have pre-built sites in place for you using content management systems like Joomla, Drupal, MediaWiki, and yes even WordPress. They include all sorts of stuff for even e-commerce like certificates, vendor accounts, etc.

Features page from their web site.
