Any tips or thoughts when considering buying an air tank?
Weight/ material (steel/aluminum) etc. I have been looking at this longacre one because i have this "fancy" air guage. http://www.longacreracing.com/catalo...id=840&catid=8 Is 7 gallons enough? http://www.longacreracing.com/catalo...d=1089&catid=9

I'd skip the quick disconnect fittings. They leak more air. A cheapie walmart/costco/sears airpig is fine. Mines about 12"diam x 24". 9 gal rings a bell. Its just right for a weekend at the track (if you're adding pressure both mornings). The ones that are half the size run out if you're not carefull. If you showup at the track w/ the racetires slightly overinflated, then a small one would prob be enough to add air the 2nd morning.

I'm in the same boat. I really don't have much room for something else,.. I'm just going to accidently keep on leaving the tank at the track and having someone bring it back for me..

Get the cheap Sears $20 tank. Anything nicer and you are completely wasting your money. I found that Sears had the best price, and that most are made by the same manufacturer and simply relabeled.

as lazy as i am, i still have to drive over to get air b/c i just don't have enough room in the car for that thing.
one of the first times i tried it i didn't look at the gauge, it was low, and it actually TOOK air from my tires and swallowed it up. 'well that was helpfull' i thought... |

well, since you DO have a pretty car, w/a really pretty interior, you should get the prettiest tank as well, though i really think there are cooler gadgets to get. for eg: full monty tire temp gauge, does 3 readings on each corner w/ full display and memory... actually usefull too! (takes up much less space
esp since you don't have a cage to climb over, driving for air can't be *that* bad. |

Yup I agree. A pyrometer is a must have. There's no point of filling your tires if you're only guessing at what the correct pressure(s) should be.

Another option no one seems to ever mention (probably for good reasons I'm not aware of) is to use a SCUBA air tank.
It costs more to buy, but they hold 2000lbs of pressure and the air is filtered if you fill them at a SCUBA shop (no water). I would think a tank would get you through several tire inflations before a refill was needed. For me it would be a freebie since I have all the gear, but I think you could get away with a cheap tank and a cheap first stage. You'd need to make D*MN sure not to ever drop it and break off the first stage or it would turn into a missile with deadly force...but people use them world wide in boats and on rocky shores with few issues.

The con to the sears joint is, it's pretty dang heavy. And when you're a girly man like myself these things matter. Sears = 21lbs/$40.00 Longacre = 13lbs/$120.00
