The oil cooler has been confirmed by Looper as having a leak that is not repairable (if I were even inclined to do so). Now I need a replacement. A new oil cooler is $900 in the best case (that I could find). What is the collective wisdom of the group about going with a used cooler (after it is checked out and cleaned)?

Slowly making progress on the maintenance tasks, did the valve adjustment this afternoon. Going to remove the fan and housing tomorrow so I can take all the bits in to be powdercoated. Having fun getting things cleaned up (and using the proane heater a lot).

After it has been checked and clean what's the problem. A new one for $900 dallars is not giong to work any better. I personally do not think you will have any fatigue issues with a used one.

Have experienced a used one. Only way to go. I get sick of those rediculous prices and since a used one that has been checked id as good as new, why not? Mine works fine.

Which cooler, the engine or external?

Either of them are cheap used, especially the trombone! (Assuming you haven't updated it...)

I have a fender mounted cooler sitting in my garage. I removed it when I installed a front center mount cooler. It worked when on my car. It's your if you want it.. let me know.

OOOOOPS. Should have been clear that this is the cooler on the engine, NOT the external one (and yes I have upgraded the external one). I'm not sure where the old cooler failed since I still have to pick it up from Looper.

Either Tweeks or Performance, or maybe it is one of the other Porsche places that sell an aftermarket cooler for about 400. Don't have any experience with reliability.

They tend to develop stress cracks -- happened to me on my old '76 911S several years ago, although it's relatively rare.

As long as you get a pressure-tested used cooler, you'll be good to go.

You CAN change the internal cooler with the engine in the car.

As said already make sure it’s tested but I would caution against one that came off a failed engine. Engine trash is hard to “take out”. They do turn up from salvaged cars, I get them all the time. I’d still get them tested, oil leaks ruin your day, oil trash ruin your engine
