Just wanted to let you know before the frenzy is over, What Mr. Estrella did not tell you along with some other misinformation.
We gave Mr. Estrella an estimate(over the phone) on Jan 23.(as logged in our appointment book with his name and #.)to remove and install rear wheel bearings on a 930. The estimate was $621.00 Parts and Labor. We did not force him to have us do this job, he could have gotten an estimate from Dr. John or other fine shop. He did not have a problem with our estimate and did not negotiate on price before the work was done,-(which would be normal, sush as buying a house, you don't offer the seller less money after settlement!!)-but after??? He did not ask what the job entailed or if removing the arm was OK. We were surprised when the arm was dropped off along with his parts by a friend, apparently Mr.Estrella was out of the area! We could only assume a hobbyist had given him some advice on how they thought it should be done.( If it were a 911 trailing arm, one hour and it would be done.) As for the arm being, we prefer the arm on the car as was infered by Mr.Estrella. It is eaiser for us to set up our jig to remove and install the bearing and hub assy. Also we need to set up end play 4\100 to 1\100 on the car and torque to 218 ft lbs to 231ft lbs. He also failed to tell you that someone had been hammering on the inner sleeve to the point it was belled out. We had to machine the surface before we could remove the outer flange! Now we have to wait for him to bring the car in to properly compleat this job. (Nothing like pissing of the doctor before surgery) Once we get the car in we have to remove the axle and brake assy to set up our dial indicator, set end play and torque to 231ft lbs. The labor for the job was $400.00, we also had to use a new $75.00 crush sleeve. The turbo bearings are tapered and require proper set up for longevity. If you just tighten them down you can damage the bearings...... Get all the facts before you bad mouth anyone, guys. We have seen many hack jobs from hobbyist to shops over the past 20 years,(some still in business some not) but we never talk badly about any job until we have all the facts.... It IS fun to join a lynch mob, isn't it...... By the way Mr.Estrella has an appointment for a four wheel alignment next week????? Hummmm PS: There is no warranty on customer supplied parts.. Respectfully: Dave Herman Service @ dullesmotorsport.com |

I'm glad you came on board.
Good to hear both sides of a story. I learned something. Do you plan to stay or just want to set the record straight? I hope you stay involved. We need some expert support here now and then. I myself will do anything I can to learn how to fix it myself if it's within the relm of possibility. I also try and save a buck and not have to have someone else do the labor. I do respect those that do it for a living. We need your help too! Hope you guy's can work it out!

Dave, fair enough. However, the information I posted was the exact info that Dave (parts manager) has relayed to me. I did question the bill asking what work was performed before I requested opinions on this board. Either Dave was in the bad mood that morning since he told me that he did not want to discuss what was performed and placed a sour taste on the conversation. However, I did call the next day to discuss the issues with Dave and he did explain what was involved. But this is after the fact that he found out about the last thread.
Trust me, I have no issues with shops since we all need your services. As a hobbyist, I just expected a justified explanation and a description of the work perfomed the day I called which I did not receive. In addition, a simple courtesy phone call to my friend to state price expectations would be nice. If you look how I started the initial thread, it was an honest question and that I needed more information on. "I had Dulles International Motorsport press out the old bearings and install new ones. However, I took the whole swing arm off my 930 so they can press out the old bearings and install new ones with the bearings and seals I have provided. They are charging $470 for labor. Does this sound right to you guys? I know the hub bearings on 930's are different but was wondering if it still cost this much?"

Quote from A previous post. "First thing I would do is to call DMS and get the facts clear. Ask if there were any unusual problems encountered during the work that would cause the labor time to be extended. Did they have to do some extra machine work or something of the like. If so, ask why they did not call and inform you that the costs would be higher than expected. If not then call around to see what other shops charge per hour and what they est the time spent to be. Just don't let them know you are cross checking completed work. Good honest work is to be compensated for fairly but no one has the right to overcharge. Shops can and many do make a good living by peforming good work at a good price. Overcharging is not part of good work in any way. It is theft pure and simple."
Thank you for an informative post. This is a good example of misscomunication on both parts. No one wants to trash anyone but no one wants to feel ripped off as well. A call to the owner when the arm arrived would have prevented this as you could have explained that removal of the arm might not save money as well as point out the damage observed.
