Default Looking for a donor 3.2 engine - bought a car

Been surfing for the past 3 years or so, looking for a 3.2 that I could rebuild and drop into my SC. I've been deterred by the price they seem to be pulling ~$4,000 and up (tough to take considering I bought my car for $5,600). This weekend I came across a complete '85 Cab, that I picked up for $5,500.

Never thought it would happen, but now I have 2 911's.

A bit of a rub to the deal though:

My brother, who has always wanted a 911 Cab, would like me to sell him the cab with my old 3.0 (high miles/needs rebuild) & trans for him to tinker with and bring back to life. Here's the issue: I'm fairly confident I can part out the cab, sell off my 3.0 & trans and come out even or better (parts seem to sell better than rollers). Meanwhile, there's no way I would feel comfortable selling him this combo for $5,500 (I'm trying to break even), and feel like he got a good deal (cab interior is shot, horrible paint, high milage chassis).

I've tried to convince him that a heavily worn roller with an engine (3.0L in a Carrera to boot) that needs a rebuild just isn't a good way to start into Porsch ownership (unless you enjoy tossing a bunch of money at a car right away), but he isn't hearing me.

I should be happy about finally finding my donor motor; instead I'm torn over what to do about my brother wanting to buy my leftovers.

Am I nuts?

Maybe try telling him that you bought a cadaver for organ transplant purposes only, and that once the heart was out the rest of the body was ready for the grave.

I'm with you that letting your brother saddle himself with a sketchy chassis AND a tired 3.0 transplant is a big mistake.

Tell him that if he wants a P-car, you'll help him find one that will likely make him happy, rather than one that likely make him miserable.

I'd just tell him its not a good combo to start with and offer to help him find his own Porsche. With a follow up of can you put an older motor in a newer car? I know they have restrictions that some motor swaps the motor has to be newer than the car it is going in to.

With all that said what does the cab look like? I know a guy down here looking for a cab to put a 3.6 in.

He's your bro, give him the car! Tell him the downside, ask him to give it back if it doesn't work out $$$ is $$$ but family is for life.

Thing about brothers is you can't do much with them except shoot em. Not recommended.

You need to help him out some. As described he will need a bank loan to put a car like that back in good shape. Keep looking for a motor. $4500 is not too much to pay for a good motor in rebuild-able shape. Better that than somebody's you don't know engine rebuild.

I love my brother too but tell him to find his own. Take what you need and sell the rest. Sounds like you could have a buyer for the shell already. FWIW, I know someone who's looking for a later transmission.

Default You Get It

Thanks for the feedback folks, I guess I'm not loosing it.

Every response hit home - the exact same stuff that has me floundering over what to do.

I guess he's going to have to see the car, as I give it a good walk through (with him taking notes as I toss out $ figures to get it in shape) to get my point. After that, if he's still dead set, I guess I will have to help him figure out what to do with it.

Man, how can one family have 2 kids who have the same obsessive tendencies?

Thanks again; made me feel better to hear others toss out the same thoughts that have crossing my mind (although the organ transplant analogy was one I hadn't considered - not a good one though - my kid brother would donate a lung if I needed it...).
