Guys,

From this discussion, I'm hooked on Nuvi 350. Just one quick question from the wife who'll be using it... she wants to know if the voice is male or female, and, can be gender of voice be changed to suit preferences?

Thanks!

Female....i haven't seen an option to change. I believe TomTom's voice can be edited.

I wish they had one that would let you record your own voice instructions. Can you imagine how much fun you could have?

Mess with your friends: Turn left hear ya dumbass!

Or get Jenna Jameson to say: oh yeah, that's right!

Just my suspicion.
That's interesting. The Porsche factory Nav system on my Cayenne doesn't map I-66 inside the Beltway either. The software is done by Navteq, who I think does maps for most of the manufacturers -- maybe Garmin too?

Garmin uses Navteq. Interesting. Luckily, I know how to get home from I-66. On the downside, I wonder if it'll take me weird ways to places in the District where I-66 would be the best route.

TomTom has a variety of male and female voices to choose from and you can buy more off their web site if you so desire. I was using one called "Mandy", but she was too bossy... now "Lori" tells me where to turn. She's nice and gentle.

Also, unlike most other US GPS units, TomTom uses TeleAtlas maps instead of Navteq. Both have pros/cons with the general consensus that I've gleened from GPS forums seeming to be that Navteq maps provide better routes and TeleAtlas has more complete and accurate street coverage(especially for newer developments).

Good choice. If the TomTom ONE didn't have such a great price with it's current $100 rebate, I would have bought the Nuvi 350. Go for it and let us know how you and your wife like it.

TomTom also has voices that speak in lots of other languages. I like listening to my directions in Mandarin.

We just opened my wife's Nuvi 350 last night. You can pick male or female voices if you are using American English or British English. It has dozens of other languages as well. All of the other languages that we tested had female voices. My wife is Portugeuse and my mother is Czech. The translation on both languages was spot on.

I placed an on-line order last night for the Nuvi 350 through Amazon, expecting delivery in two days. While Wal-Mart online had the lowest price, they charge tax! Amazon's delivered price (shipping and handling, no tax), was about $5 less than the Wal-Mart price.
