I RTFM. Actually, I read the PDF since Garmin didn't include a paper one on the box. But that's another complaint...

Right now I have it set to Fastest Route and not to avoid U-turns, highways, toll roads, unpaved roads, etc. (All the "avoid" options are unchecked.)

I use a Garmin 5 in the car and keep a Garmin e-trex in my E&E kit. I also have a Fore-running attached to the straps of my chest rig. I guess you could say I'm GPS happy. But this is not a place you want to get lost!

I also like the Quest a lot. I have the original which has less memory and you have to load the maps yourself. Not a big deal to do. If you bike there is a mount for your handlebars which works pretty well. I bought it at gpsnow.com, decent pricing and fast shipping.

Dave,

Try reloading the maps if you are really having a problem. Maybe yours sat on the shelf too long and is out of date?

BTW, I just got a Garmin Nuvi 350 and LOVE IT. Especially how it "speaks" the street names.
I'm glad you like yours Vu. I bought the Nuvi 350 as a Christmas present for my wife but I haven't had a chance to play with it yet.

It's my wife's present as well....but I've been "road testing" it.

You might think about doing the same so that you can customize the splash screen, load music and pictures, charge it up, update the software, and input the "home" and other userful addresses.

I also learned all the neat nuances of the unit by using it. This way I can give her a quick "how to use" lesson after she opens it on xmas day

I'll probably let her open it up tomorrow night. We go on a road trip to Kentucky on Friday. Hopefully, that gives me enough time to get it running. I'm not the highest tech person so I might be badgering you with questions.

Vu, you are a thoughtful and selfless husband. All that dreadful roadtesting just so you can instruct her how to use it on xmas day! That sounds like a lot of work.

Todd, I'll try reloading the maps tonight. Maybe that'll help.

Default Garmin Routing Issues

I have a few year old Garmin Ique (palm based). It is great, but I have noticed "anomolies" with I-66 in particular. I believe that the issue may be HOV, and the software can't handle it, so they just will not route on the road inside the beltway.

Just my suspicion.

Bob,

I have the TomTom ONE. It is really nice. Small (but good size screen), fast, great features for routing around problem roads, can be joined via bluetooth to your cell phone and then the unit can download traffic updates, weather, and much more. It does not do text-to-speach for street names, but do you really need that since it clearly displays the next street name at the top of the screen?

Along with the Nuvi 350/360/660, the TomTom ONE consistently gets very high reviews from consumer ratings and profressional reviewers as well.

It is also a great value. With the current $100 rebate they are offering it comes in under $300.

Good news for you is that there are plenty of good choices out there, so it is hard to go wrong. And if you do, just return it for a different one. I suggest buying at a local store (Best Buy, for example) so you have that option.
