A few weeks ago I picked up a 914. It's a 76 2.0, Sunlight Yellow.
Here is the mandatory picture. ![]() The car had already major surgery to fix the hell hole, so I cannot take credit for that, as well for the engine rebuild. Here some pictures from the surgery ![]() ![]() The car was converted to Carbs by the PO. ![]() So now it's to start work with some things these car have. The Tach was not working and I found one for replacement. So, out with the old and in with the working one. ![]() This was a good opportunity to replace the BA7s instrument lights with LED vintage white. ![]() Here before ![]() And here after ![]() The next is the headlights, I cannot believe that people can still drive in the dark with those sealed beams. ![]() There you go. ![]() The backup light was not working, and I ended up to install a new wire from thr backup switch at the tranny to the housing. I didn't want to dig into the electr. panel at this time. It it is not possible to hide that the car was painted with everything on it. Also the cable had not chance to hide or escape from the painter. ![]() After opening the rear trunk a few times, it didn't looked right on the left hinge. Here already removed for repair. The sleeve was broken out from the mounting point ![]() ![]() This is how it was installed. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is how it should be. ![]() OK, lets fix it. Drilling all the way true, and cut the thread. ![]() Weld on an additional nut from the backside. ![]() Ready to weld back in. ![]() Done ![]() Hinge back in, and ready to install the lid. ![]() I will continue to fix all these little enoying things. More to come. Cheers Engelbert

Unfortunately, it looks like the repair on the hinge mount is incorrect. The part that you drilled out and re-threaded is actually supposed to fit inside the mount, leaving a flat face on the surface. Then, the bolt that attaches the hinge to the hinge mount is actually a shoulder bolt, and the bolt's shoulder bottoms against the hinge mount and provides the surface on which the hinge rotates.
I just went through this on my '73 914. I had to fix both (L&R) hinge mounts, since both were cracked. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pics because I didn't think anyone would be interested. Anyway, here's a pic I found on the web of the mount and shoulder bolt: Last edited by BillC; 06-26-2016 at 06:35 PM. |

Thanks, I will save that picture. This is good to know for the time when I go deeper into the car. This was just a quick fix. I think it make sense to replace both mounts. However, when I studied the torsion spring system, there is a lot of force at that mount. It made me think about a modification and use gas shocks like the 911 have it.
Again, thanks for the info. Cheers Engelbert

You should consider signing up at 914World. It's a forum dedicated to 914s, and a great source of knowledge. The forum is here: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php
Also, there is a vendor called Camp914, and they have kits to replace the front and rear springs with gas struts. I haven't tried them, but they have a good reputation on 914World. Take a look here: http://camp914.com/products.html Another great vendor is 914 Rubber ( http://www.914rubber.com ). Lots of hard-to-find trim and rubber parts. I've ordered quite a bit from these guys. |

Way too high an Fe to Fe2O3 ratio for you. You might have to drive this one around for fun rather than take it down to the pans.

Something else that should be high on your inspect/fix/replace list: Check the fuel lines. If your car still has the original plastic lines, you should replace them ASAP. They have a nasty habit of cracking and leaking fuel. Quite a few 914s have been lost to fuel fires due to cracked original lines. I though mine were okay before I dropped the engine, but one of the lines split as I was disconnecting hoses, which just confirmed the need to do this. There are a couple of vendors making pre-formed stainless steel replacements, or you can fairly easily make some out of brake line.
