Default 17mm Allen????

I need one to replace the trans fluid. I thought Sears would carry it - not the one in Manassas. Anyone have a lead on where I can buy one?
Thanks
Steve

Snap-on, actually less $$ than Sears. You can also use a 17mm across the flats bolt w/2 nuts. Used that & many others for years before I finally got the right tool.

I have one if you want to borrow it. Dave is on to a simple way around not havng the right tool too. Take a bolt with a 17 mm head and clamp on a set of vice grips tight as you can get and use the bolt head as a driver. Sometimes this is enought to break the cap plugs loose. Always loosen the fill plug first! The drain plugs tend to be easer to remove and if you can't get the fill plug out after draining the old fluid out you have a problem.

Steve, the Sears in G'burg has a bunch of the craftsman 17 mm allen's. Let me know if you want me to grab it for you, it's about 6 bucks. Owning the tool might come in handy if you plan on changing the tranny fluid again in the future.

Steve, If you want to make the drive, I'll give you mine.
I found out after buying it that I didn't need it.
My trans has plugs with regulat hex heads. Mine is an 83 euro. Maybe someone change them out along the way?

Double check yours and I'll double check my allen wrench size and that it's still arround.

I also probably have a pump to put the oil back in.

Kurt, on my boat, you pump the oil into the outdrive from the bottom hole until it comes out the top. (I think this is so you don't trap air bubbles in the case of the lower unit.) If you ever get stuck and not able to get the top bolt out this should work temporarily on a p-car if you can find the right fitting on the bottom. Even some duct tape bunched up arround the tube of the pump would do in an situation such as you described.

Exactly. I have done this on my street '76 and all the trannys we run on the track cars. Makes life much easier with only needing a 17mm wrench. Plugs are still tapered(sp) so fit like the originals. I posted about this before (I think on PP) and I was warned (by several) that if the "correct" plug wasn't left in there then the tech might not know what fluid to put in the "device".

ROTFLMAO ... still hurts my head to think of the stupidity of those replies.

And that’s why the oil tank got moved back behind the axel in ‘73. Done dumb enough to expect outbreaks at any moment but sometimes people can be seriously disconnected You still hear of people drilling mounting holes directly into gas tanks On any given fill up I see someone smoking & peering into the filler

Bill True you could force the fluid in through the drain hole but how do you keep it in while taking the fill fitting out and putting the drain plug back in? Exxon Valdize type manuver.

I guess it is better to think for a second and not get "drained" into a corner in the first place. All 3 of my early gear boxes have the hex bolt type plugs. Which years/types have the 17mm socket type plugs?
