Hello all
My kool carbon pads from dersix.com are just about worn out. They only lasted through 3 events this go around, on the carrera they still had plenty of life after 3 events. What's the hot setup now? I like the feel of the current pads, they just didnt seem to last that long. I know, brake less. I dont want to chance the current pads for the upcoming 3 days at summit. I do plan on installing the 993 deflectors and removing the backing plates when I install the pads. I'm looking for track/street pads. Anyone thoughts?

I'm currently using the Hawk performance pads. They have lasted about 3 DE's and still have some life left. They replaced a set of Pagids that I liked alot.
The Hawks feel very linear (pedal pressure vs. stopping power) and pad life seems to be holding up well. The Pagids had the same linear feel to a point, then just a little more pedal pressure and the hand of god steps in. The pagids seem to dust a little more. I've heard good things about the carbon fiber pads also. Ask Ted what type of of CF pads he used at VIR.

Charlie - how are the Hawk pads on your rotors? I've heard they tend to eat them pretty quickly.

For my 3064 lb 993, I'm a big fan of the Hawk Blues. Cheaper than the Oranges by $100 a full set, no bedding routine, and no pad deposit. The two downsides are 1) the dust is corrosive on paint and wheels and 2) they are supposed to be tough on rotors. For the dust issue, I bought a cheap $150 Home Depot pressure washer and blast the hell out of my Fikses immediately after each event. I also gently Pressure wash the paint on the car. Regarding the abrasivness, my rotors developed cracks well before I reached the minimum disc thickness.

They are Zimmerman x-drilled. No cracks (yet?).

Chris,
Get a decent brake cooling rig on your fronts. As you begin to use the brakes more [going faster will do that] you need to get rid of more heat. Good ducted cooling will close to double the life of your pads by keeping them within their design temp range.

BTW, the Hawk street pads I was using only held up for a couple of DE weekends. And a brake bleed was guaranteed sometime over the course of a weekend. |

Some empirical evidence to back up Tony's suggestion...
I have the Cool Brakes kit on the front of my car. I just changed pads (after 5 track days) last week and found my rears to be paper thin (<1mm of pad material left) while the fronts were only about 1/2 gone (3 to 4mm of pad left). Clearly the cooling helps keep the front pads from getting too hot and disintegrating. Anyone know of good cooling kits for the rear?

This may not help in your search but ... I run PF 97s on my Targa ... without cooling kit and they hold up. OEM (read NOT Zimmerman cast cross drilleds) rotors. Have run a few DEs and HPDCs and have left them in there for spirited street driving
Hawk Blues on the tub with OEM rotors. I would recommend the hawk blues except ... I am only stopping 2100lbs (with driver and gas) ... much different wear characteristics than on a 2,8xx - 3,xxx lb car...+ driver) I like the PF97s and have heard reports and seen the abrassive results of the PF90s. Pagids I have run were very dusty but, pedal felt similar to the PF97s. Pagids didn't seem to hold up as long and I think were more $. (could be wrong there). No experience with EBC reds or greens (forget which are the track pad) but reports from other racers are that they hold up well. Porterfields are another option ... well respected by american iron road racers. FWIW Jason |

Porterfield = Kool Karbon
These come from the same manufacturer - only difference is branding & marketing. There is another 'brand' for these pads as well - don't recall, but they are more expensive. Pete Tremper has the best priice for these pads.
