Default 996 or 993

Im on the quest for a new car since my 964 is considered totaled by the insurance company. Im looking at 993's or a 996 at the moment. I want to get some feedbacks about these two models from you guys even though I know that some of us are biased about certain models but try to keep an open mind. Not too sure at the moment, air cool or water cool.

-I found this bad ass 99' 996 yellow/black down in texas. If everything checks out than that could be my new car.

Tim, they're both 911s, so your choice can't be bad. If you like the 996 styling and find a good example, grab it. Hope it works out well for you.

Jazzbass, what is your opinion again?
I think both are hot 911's, it really comes down to what is available for the right price. The 996's that you have been looking at seem like pretty clean, and the prices are comparable to 993's .

Have never driven a 993, but loved my 996. The prices now are pretty low, so I'd seriously consider one if you have the means. My '99 was a blast to drive hard, and trouble free for the most part. 'Cept for that coolant tank leak

Seriously, they're a great car, drive both models and buy what you like best.

Tim:

Do some research on the 996s, as I don't know what cars came with which motors. Short story. Friend grenaded his C4S motor at WG last weekend. The car was under 40k as I recall. Just read an article in European Car magazine that indicated that there is a problem with the C4S motor and that the Dealers have crate motors waiting to be installed.

The 993s have the o-ring leaking problem at the base of the cylinders. So it's not a matter of if you will need a rebuild, it's just when will you need a rebuild due to thier failure.

When I bought my 1997 targa, it was parked next to a 996, same color Artic Silver, black interior. The first thing that jumped out was the lines of the 993 vs the 996. the 993 had a lot more curves and looked 10x more aggressive. The interior is like the older 911's, and the sound is better than the 996. Performance wise, the 996 should be better, easier to drive (clutch is much improved over the 993).

If you want a kick a$$ 996 that is local, check out this one here in Leesburg. http://www.autogallery-bmw-porsche-m...ollsroyce.com/
It is a 99 with tons of factory mods (GT3 kit, engine upgrade, supple leather and more), it also has new BBS wheels and tires. They are asking around $49k and it has 36k miles. Very clean and drives great. I know the new owners there and they are very honest and ready to move this car. They also have a lot of other great cars too. You will just barely see the 996 in one of the pictures on their site. No, I don't work there ; )

But back to the 993 vs 996. Personally for me I prefer the 993 because of the styling. I would not sneeze at owning a 996 for the right price. Either way, you will be getting a great car but I think the 993 gets a lot more looks.

If I won a 996 on Wheel of Fortune, I'd trade it in for a 993 the next day. And onctrary to popular belief, they are very DIY'able. Marc, I beg to differ on the O-rings. Variorams 3.6's have their issues, but that's not one I've ever heard of and I read the Rennlist 993 horror stories every day. The clogged secondary air intake ports are a cause for concern and can be pricey to fix - and make you fail emissions if you don't fix it. But that's the only real achilles heel of the 993. Oh, the worst problem with 993's is that they need no mods at all! But that hasn't stopped me. Just see my other post on Big Reds.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll get a 993 if I can find one that has the specs that I need. At the moment it seems the 996 im looking at will fit the bill.

Okay heres the lowdown of the 996.

-MY99 996
-Speed Yellow
-6spd
-Black Interior
-18 inch factory chrome wheels - tires in excellent shape
-CDR 220 stereo with the factory 6 disc changer
-PSE (full time)
-20,680 miles

The car has always been garaged, and always serviced by Porsche here in Dallas (Hans at Boardwalk Porsche here is my tech)

It has no problems and leaks not a drop of anything. The car is exceptionally clean.

-I know, the chrome rims will be the first to go. This car looks like it could be a contender. Please let me know of any good 993's for sale if anyone runs into one. Thanks.

-Dan M, Thanks for the link.

Tim check out the Rennlist classifieds from last week. One of the nicest polar silver 993's, Big Reds, Euro tails lenses, turbo wheels, etc. is on there for a pretty decent price. Or drop me your email. Good deals on 993's grow on trees.
