Default Hershey 2004- Review

What a great day! Never have I seen so many Porsches in one place. Weather was wonderful. The swap meet was pretty good. I wasn't searching for much but I still took at least four laps of the vendor area.

I scored:
-28 new factory lugnuts
-blitz wax, PS21, 3m cleaner, car duster and other cleaning supplies
-two diecast model cars
-like new ashtray
-two Porsche picture frames
-Service cover/bra
-two cans of ATE Blue

Good seeing fellow dorkis in attendance, but since we were all out on the "hunt" we didn't get to chat much. Guess we'll trade stories at the next gathering.

For those who couldn't make it, here are some pics:

Super day . . . . about due after the last 3 years brought rain and misery.

Dorkies were well represented . . . at least 8 of us.

Lots of good stuff . . . I couldn't find a visor, OE Spark plug wrench or fan holder wrench, but I did manage to find a buy one get one free deal on 2 Hoosiers that were heat cycled . . . There is an advantage to having 15" wheels after all.

Great seeing everyone . . . . May 23 is right around the corner

That's the last year I go up the night before. Between 2 hours of sleep, no food, unloading and hustling junk, running around scavenging for parts, I was getting delirious by the afternoon . The weather was great! There were tons of Porsches, and people, but not enough parts. I was really disappointed in the parts selection this year, there was hardly anything good for 911's. I started searching at 6:45 when most people were unloading and I still could not get a dashboard, steering wheel, or Recaro seats . I think next year I will just drive up the same day and take it easy. I had a great time hanging out with fellow dorki's, Charlie, Chris(Jazzbass), and BillW(BW911). I saw many other members, but didn't have time to stop and chat since I was busy hunting, or they were doing the same.

I didn't pick up a single item, but was quite temped by a partially disassembled 3.2 with DME and spare 964 crank for $4200. Would have made a potent 3.4 with little work or monster 3.6 with bored C's and new high comp. JE's.

My find of the day was I ran into the vendor who sold me the Fluidine oil cooler last year and told me of the shop in MD that can make the hoses I need with exact dimensions, etc.

The weather and the scenery was great. The part selection, IMO, sucked. Pari and I were talking about this - there seemed to be a distinct bias against having parts for 6 cylinder Porsches. Have a 356, a 914 or a 944? Then you were set. Looking for 911 parts? Well, there was a lot of junk, but not close to the selection of last year. Oh well, still found a couple items - Euro bumper pads and H4 trim rings for project "Faux ROW". Next step is to steal Ted's 915 w/ oil cooler while its still out of his car.

Chris, didn't you see the 85 ROW Carrera tranny they come with oil cooler) at Hershey? I bought a number of things from my shopping list, so I was pretty happy. BTW - Lu is great at haggling over prices.

Personally, I thought it was a great show this year. But I'm one of those minority guys (914 owner) who usually winds up disappointed after sorting through the preponderance of 911 parts in years past and finding nothing. I saw Justin and Jim and Scott but don't know enough of the rest of you to know if I saw you or not.

But GAWD! what gorgeous weather!!! Great drive up and back. I got a great start on my sunburn, uh, tan.

It was great to get out and see everyone, weather was beautiful, but I didn't really find much. Although there were a lot of 914 parts, I thought a lot looked like junk, and those that weren't selling junk were asking for big $$$$.

If you went to shop from companies like Rennline, or Mainly, then there were good deals to be had, but I was disappointed in what was available used, and with the prices. I mean who tries to sell used ball joints....gimme a break

The drive up Friday night sucked....rained/stormed all the way up...my car was sparkling before I left and by the time I got to Hershey, it looked like I hadn't cleaned it in weeks.

The drive back, however was much more enjoyable. Cruised along a red 911 for a while and then towards the end of 83 I shared the highway with a fellow dorki in his white 914 (Was that John B?). We've meet before, but I don't remember names well.
