Default Wiring fun and games

This thread should be called "thoughts of shooting myself." Tracing why my underhood light did not work got me tracing all kinds of wires. Coincidently my inside lights and glove box light did not work. Also the lights-on buzzer did not work. I was trying to fix one at a time with the logic that one solution would lead to others. Looking behind the instruments from the trunk I saw a broken wire. Good find. Then another. Emmmm what is that charing? What is this rubber? Oh $hit the wires are burned. One bare.

That's tonight.

Took the instruments out. If you want to see a mess, come by. I will probably spend a month fixing this problem.

What I think happened is a fault somewhere put a load on the alternator circuit. Current traveled thru a larger wire and heated the wire and it then shorted to an adjacent wire to ground. Burned wires. It looks like the only part that burned was outside the harness. Where the wire was wraped in the harness it is OK.

Any wiring experts around? I could use a copy of a owners manual for a 79 911SC coupe. If you do drop by to see what is behind the instruments be prepared for tears!

Don’t spend that much time! I still have the “Faux Racer” & it still has all of the wiring. Do a road trip Friday, Saturday or Sunday & you can have all you can carry. We’re nearly across the street from the Mt. Vernon Hospital, just 4 miles outside the beltway right off Exit 1 (Ft. Belvoir).

Hi OldTee, I will bring some electrical diagrams I have of our SC's. I'll drop by sometime this weekend. You up for the PCA event on the 28th? Don't get too frustrated, my wiring was a mess, and there are still a few gremlins I need to sort out. Do you have a voltmeter? Here's a link about electrical problems.

Thanks, I have a Bently and a good schematic plus experience reading them. frogers911, drop by and say Hello. Always nice to know a second pair of hands may be close by when the reach extends beyond the strech.

Droped by Dan Reilly and he helped by letting me remove a harness from a older 911, plus a few other things.

Yeah... the Montgomery Co crowd grows... maybe we'll actually have an event on this side of the river for once. Who's up for a drive through MoCo agricutural preserve?

I was in your neighborhood yesterday, but couldn't remember the street or address.
My son is now playing Lacrosse up in Montgomery Village. Just off E.Village drive. So I'll be up there on Tuesdays and Thursdays 5-6:30, Sat 11-1 and some Sunday's 4-6. I have nothing to do for the hour or so while I'm waithing so If you need some help with something let me know.

Hi all-
I have an 81' SC. Would be great to go for a drive with some people. Unfortunately my car is out of commission for another month or so. I was in an accident that did some damage to my front end. I am in the middle of repairing that, also taking the down time to do my brakes and suspension.

Post a topic on your project.
I'd like some details because I'm planning on painting my car this spring!
