Hadn't driven the e46 wagon [EDIT: 2002 325iT 5 speed] in a while and after all that rain, I got a dashboard full of lights. I searched the typical BMW forums, but thought I'd see if anyone here had the issue and can direct me towards a resolution. Anyways, here's what I'm looking at:

Amber: DSC, ABS
Red: BRAKE

Also, the car makes a single ding at you when you start driving, then shuts up until you restart the engine.

With all the rain, I can definitely confirm that the ABS is not working. Didn't have a good chance to play with testing the traction control yet. From reading the forums, the expensive fix sounds like replacing some modules. The cheap fix is replacing the wheel sensors.

Anybody had this problem? Any advice on solution or further troubleshooting? Is it safe-ish to drove like this?

I've heard of it - most say speed sensors like you've read. Really need to read the codes to start pinpointing. Any chance you can get it up here this weekend?

The "trifecta" of lights on my touring (M52b28TU) meant ABS module rebuild from Module Masters (Bosch ABS controller v5.7) several years ago. No issues or repeats since.

Didn't even bother going through the wheel speed sensor dance as is a known issue.

Perhaps similar for the E46 like the E39s.

Update: Had the car at the dealership for airbag recalls so I had them read the codes that I wasn't able to get from other tools

0017F unbekannter Fehlerot (Unknown Error)
005DF5 ABS-DSC: Internal fault, control unit

Now more research to be done on my part.

EDIT:

34516765453 seems to be the part number I need (#1). And sadly, that doesn't look like the module that module masters can rebuild. So looks like I will need a new one or a used one and recode it to my VIN. Will try to get eyes on the part tomorrow to see if that matches what I see here though.

I think this is a steering angle, but its not very clear. Also not 100% sure it is even relevant here.

Just a FWIW...
2003 X5 3.0 gave same indication after sitting in damp weather following a CV boot repair while we were out of town. Upon return, tried to take it 4hrs away & got this indication in addition to engine code about 50 miles in. After shut down & restart, good for 50 miles & repeat. Friend later told me it takes that long to run through all the codes on the bus.

Brake trifecta was a dirty sensor on the wheel that had the CV boot done. Mech had greasy hands when he put it back in. Very quick to clean & reinstall, so IMHO always worth doing when this indication surfaces. Wouldn't trust until I put 50 continuous miles on it though.

Did you have the codes read? If so, what were they? Mine seem to point to something other than the sensor.

A steering angle sensor would not trip the ABS lights (only DSC). When the module goes bad, it usually says other things (cant recall exactly now, but something like actuation error)

If the ABS pump/control is bad, you'll have to replace that. Not hard to do, but you have to re-code your car's VIN.

Just did this on my racecar last year. Carry a spare now.
