Crest WTB. 2005-2007 99x AX & DE street legal

Any thoughts on 995 vs 996?
Seeking good condition coupe, "(4s or reg) prefer original but modifications
Will Be Considered. May become a track car in the future.

Open to advice. If these are not good years let me know.
Price is key. Will go to an earlier year if price is reasonable.
Of course price range is key so 15k-25k is my range.

high mileage 996 will fit your budget and leave room for the required maintenance and upgrades. Not sure 997's are low enough in $$ yet.

ideally, the watercooled cars from '99-2006 are not the known to be the most robust per internet lore and some local experiences. This is why they can be found relatively cheaply.

The more reliable are the '09 and up cars due to engine redesign (or, the GT2/3/TT cars) None of those are in your price range.

If looking for a future track car you do not want a 4S. Stick with a C2. 20k buys a really nice 996.1 with the 3.4 motor. Stay away from garage queens and look for one with reasonable miles that has a documented history of being taken care of. If tracking make sure you install the x51 oil baffle.

996s really are the best bang for the buck. Make sure the IMS retrofit is done by a reputable shop and it has a LSD... The ones equipped with red leather seem to be faster
