Note that the roll bars appear to be missing. Back in the day before roll cages, roll bars were simply bolted in. And later transference between cars was very common. The bars were stamped with the log book number, and the log book travelled with the roll bar. In fact, when I started racing with my 240Z in 1985, I bought a used roll bar from a 280Z racer. Because it had a log book, technically (grandfather clause), I was able to run just the roll bar. I did my 2 SCCA schools with just the roll bar. But later decided to add the rest of cage to it, which were becoming more common at the time, and required on "new" builds.

I got an opportunity to look up close at the 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe(CSX2287) when it was at the DC autoshow last year. Didn't get the best picture of the cockpit but you can see no cage and a simple old school leather bucket seat. Badass car.

I remember in the early 80's after joining the Porsche and BMW clubs and running a few DEs. Like many, I was immediately hooked.

My first thought was.. wouldn't it be neat to buy an old race car and do this? They're cheap and nobody wants them. Tried to get a buddy of mine to do this with me at about $7k each for a BMW 3.0CSL, E-type coupe, Shelby Mustang ($3500) etc.. As college kids, before we could get our acts together.. Poof!, vintage racing was born and all the deals went away!!

Hell, I still remember the 300SL roadster I passed on because $7,500 was sooooo much money.

Oh well.

I had a friend in high school who drove one. He lived next to a Dyson (Dyson racing) who let him drive his cars. The Daytona Coupe was limited to track use (mostly drag strip) but he drive a 289 to school ! He would park it far from any other cars...

That particular Shelby Daytona Coupe is at the Simeone Museum in Philly, well worth the trip to see their cars, including the "Hippie" 917 and a host of older race/sports cars.

Here's my pic gallery from my 2009 visit. It is truly an incredible and well displayed collection. I especially like how almost all the cars are displayed in life-sized dioramas.
