|  Clutch Kit for '87 911? 
			
			I need to finally get things moving on the clutch replacement for the Targa.  When the current clutch system was installed by IMA during the motor rebuild ~15 years ago I believe an aftermarket plate was installed (i.e., springs and not a rubber center) but other than that is was nothing special. Looking around on de interwebz, there are quite a few aftermarket kits for the hydraulic-clutch Carreras, with fancy Stage 2, Stage 3 names, etc. But I've been struggling to find any good information on what kit/ package works best for a car that is driven mainly on-track, but will see some street driving, including driving back and forth to events and sitting in stop-and-go traffic around DC. Anyone have any experiences with aftermarket clutch kits/ packages for the hydraulic clutch Carreras? (and maybe 964s?) I'm happy to hear the bad as well as the good, as knowing what to avoid is worth almost as much as knowing which ones have a good reputation. FWIW, the flywheel is stock, and I'm hoping to not change it. TIA

			Sachs clutch kit, rockauto and others sell it. No reason so 'upgrade' as I bet it's whats in there and was good for 15 yrs.   I'm happy to help if you need a hand

			Hey David, I have an 87 targa rebuilt to 3.4 recently.  When I completed the engine rebuild I decided to do some clutch upgrading.  I replaced the original rubber disc with a spring disc and am overall happy with that.  The flywheel stayed the same but I changed the pressure plate to a Kennedy aluminum unit which IIRC saved about 10 pounds on the rotating mass.  I am very happy with the setup with the exception of two issues. 1) The main shaft of the trans is a little noisy at idle and under heavy acceleration up to about 2500 rpms from a standstill. 2) The clutch pedal effort is noticably greater than with the stock plate.  The pressure plate version I have is their 550lb spring which is more than enough and there is supposedly is a 450lb stock version they offer in aluminum also which I would recommend if you go this route.  Regarding the trans noise, I believe that much of it is contributed to bearing wear and it would probably be quieter with new bearings, 130,000 on the trans. An original rubber disc might also quiet things down as well .  I really like the way the engine revs now and there are no idling problems at all with the lighter setup.

			Hey David, No I haven't tracked it yet.  I have been focusing on the Cayman so far but I do want to get the 911 on the track sometime soon.  I drive the 911 daily and am really enjoying it, clutch is great.  But if I had to do it again I would opt for Kennedy's 450lb plate which I believe is still about 110 lbs of more clamping force then the stock 3.2 from the factory IIRC.

			DD - Last year when I did my build, I installed a Kennedy LWPP and this disc: http://www.patrickmotorsports.com/pa...-racing-sport/ However I got the disc at clutchnet.com for about half the price Patrick sells it for. (Clutch.net 6BS7021 $165) It's got WAY more clamping force than my old rubber center disc but its awesome on track. Not sure I'd want to daily drive it tho. Make sure you do the G50 shaft fork update and new throw out bearing, etc.
