Thumbs up SP- Lots of talk about noth'n

Google is as many of you know a close personal friend of mine! Sooo
according to insurance companies;

Encountering a Deer
  • Never swerve to avoid a deer in the road. Swerving can confuse the deer on where to run. Swerving can also cause a head-on collision with oncoming vehicles, take you off the roadway into a tree or a ditch, and greatly increase the chances of serious injuries.
  • Deer are unpredictable creatures, and one that is calmly standing by the side of the road may suddenly leap into the roadway without warning. Slowing down when you spot a deer is the best way to avoid a collision. However, if one does move into your path, maintain control and do your best to brake and give the deer time to get out of your way.
  • Don't rely on hood whistles or other devices designed to scare off deer. These have not been proven to work.
My own personal experience w/deer on any paved service is they are unpredictable at best! Muther nature in her infinite wisdom has instilled the need to “dodge” prey! I’ve had them rush my car turn and when I sped backup cut back towards me. Just like their genes tell them too.

Some know that I hit a deer on the way to SP 2 years ago in my truck. Never saw it till it till I circled back to make sure it was dead. I did see the other 2 that were with it through and was slowing down because of it.

Crips they even hit people on bicycles and at speed you aren’t likely have much in the way of a warning. Best advice I’ve ever gotten was to keep your eyes moving all the time! Remember as hunter/gathers our own physiology has made our eyes more sensitive to peripheral movement.

With all the talk of track cars hitting deer on course, reading this sort of brings up another issue.

If the deer at the track were to be chased off outside of the track fence, wouldn't that just lead to more cars on Summit Point Road and the surrounding area hitting deer?

Perhaps yes, and no. SP contains the woods which is their natural habitat. Unless they are literally completely wiped out in a region, they will return to it.

But also like you and I, deer are creatures of habit with a routine that includes moving from place to place for a reason. To cover during the daytime to sleep and stay protected, to water at dusk and dawn to drink, and to feed at night.

I'll bet the locals have just as many stories, if not more, about local deer strikes plaguing them at night. I'd also wager any attempts, successful or otherwise, to remove them from SP won't have any affect the surrounding areas.

I've seen and heard about more deer strikes by DE drovers on the roads around SP than actually on track. Crumb's Church Rd is always an adventure.
