Default 915 Mag case corrosion .... How bad?

So I pulled out the trans I have slated for the rsr today. Figured I would clean it up and take a good look at it while I was waiting for the fiberglass stuff to set. After getting all the typical road grime and oil/grease off the case I noticed alot of case corrosion. Nothing looks really structural as a deal breaker except where the steel studs thread into the case halves. Almost looks like electrolysis. For all you 915 gurus .... This a deal breaker or usual findings? I dont remember seeing this much corrosion on my last 915 trans out of the 73 I had. Thanks.

Pretty, though not as bad as some I've seen. You need to figure out someway to stop the process. Don't think just wire brushing it will be enough. Maybe some of the engineers can chime in with a way?

Has anyone used Gibbs? I remember seeing some posts on the bird board long ago, but no long term postings.

Thanks Guys! Ive heard the same thing on pelican about Gibbs for protection of the case when on the car or storage. Found alot of info on surface corrosion but nothing that looks like what I have. There is still some crud on the case that looks like corrosion. I might hit it with some light media blasting to clean it up like new. I think alot of damage has already been done and I can fix/stop further damage. No holes but the corrosion around the studs has me worried. I dont want to buy new cases before I know if they are shot.

If the threads are shot, you could place Helicoils or Timeserts, which would be better than new. but more work. It's more the inside surface I think you should care about.

Meh, clean the chunks off and soak it in Gibbs if looks don't matter. If they do seal up all the openings and glass bead the case then soak it with Gibbs.

If you want, I can check with the local-ish 914 trans rebuilder. He sometimes paints the cases if the owner wants a great looking trans.
But I'll go the Gibbs route.
