Default Marlboro Motor Raceway

I came across this link to the old track in Upper Marlboro, it has some nice links, and a Google map link to a view today. It looks pretty rural out there,
I was under the impression that it was built up and there would be no way to reopen it, to many neighbors. It looks pretty grown over, but reopening it sure seems possible to me.

Historical Note

A 1/3 mile dirt oval operated from July 21st, 1952 through August 23rd, 1953. A 4/10 mile dirt oval operated from September 13th, 1953 to the end of the year. The 1/3 mile paved oval opened on March 24th, 1954 and operated until the facility closed down in 1969. A 0.7 mile paved road course was used on May 22nd, 1955. The 1.7 mile paved road course operated fromn 1955 to 1969. A 2.4 mile paved road course was used on May 12th, 1957.
Marlboro was the site of the first SCCA President's cup races, which were initially awarded by President Eisenhower. The track was the site of a number of 12 hour endurance races for FIA sedans, and was famous for its January Refrigerator Bowl races.
The SCCA Trans-Am raced here in 1966 and 1967. The track shut down in 1969 after SCCA road racing moved to the newly opened Summit Point. The road course did not survive tightening SCCA track safety standards due to the closeness of the parallel straightaways.

I'd say it was due to the horse track, probably spooked the horses too much.

It is a cool track and would be REALLY cool to reopen...maybe with some soundwalls or something surrounding the complex. I'm sure it will never happen though. Would be interesting to look into, but I don't have enough capital to finish my cars much less try to get a racetrack up and running.

Just across 301 from The Show Place Arena/Prince George's Equestrian Center puts it just a couple of miles outside the beltway. It closed the year before I moved down here. But there were some events held there after that. Seems a shame as the property has never really been used for anything else.

The old Beltsville Speedway was another local gear head landmark that’s been lost to history. I did run there a couple of times but the roundy rounds have never held much interest for me. Same with the Manassas Speedway / Drag Strip! Great Friday night rendezvous for drags, Saturday modified and demolition derby, and Sunday Auto-x events. Still operational but civilization is moving closer each year.

Not so close but equally fun destination is the old Fairground in Frederick MD. Attended and ran in several flat track motorcycle races there. Nothing like the big mile dirt track up north but still scary/cool/fun! This July 4th event makes it the “oldest continuous running flat track event (83rd annual?). Scared myself silly enough that I finally packed it in. But it’s true "real men do it in the dirt… sideways!"

I started a facebook page for it a while back but I haven't updated it in a long time. Spent lots of my childhood watching SCCA races there in the 60's.

Wow, great pictures, seriously historical cars there!

It'd be great to do a retro renovation like at VIR

I did an autocross there on Sunday that was the last day it was open. There was a church (I believe one of the 2 buildings on the left side) that was the main cause of the demise of the track. It complained about too much noise on Sundays. Also when I was there the river on the upper right flooded the track after a hard rain. This was getting to be a common occurence at that time.
