Default Wheel Spacer Question...

Gents,

My 964 is a dual purpose car, but when I slap the track wheels on it I get some rubbing on the oil return line and the rear suspension control arm in the passenger rear. The fit is tight with the outside finder, but I would really like to move the wheel out just a little bit. I currently have 1/4" spacers that the shop in FL put on the car, but they won't fit with the wider Hoosiers and I don't want to trade one rubbing for another.

I've talked to a couple of machine shops and it doesn't sound like they can without significant cost, machine them down to 2-3 mm from the 1/4". Does anyone know somewhere that I can get that done at a reasonable cost?

I was just thinking about this and was wondering if it is even a viable solution to use some large washers to gain a little (1-2mm) clearance? This kinda sounds a little shady, but would this be OK for track duty? If so, that is an easy and cheap solution since I'm looking for such a small amount of clearance.

Let me know your thoughts.

If I were in charge I would have to say no and do so for for a number of reasons, clamping force is based on surface area along with the bolts and IIRC the wheel is hub centric. Please use proper spacers. 1/8 spacers are available

X2 and 964 wheel studs just aren't that long. What size wheels/tyres, and offset?? Most reasonable size wheel/tyre combos don't rub. So maybe the problem is in the oil line, alignment or ???<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o></o>

Thanks guys.

My track wheels are BBS RS-GTs 18”, 8/9.5 (offsets: 50/48) which is the recommended size for my car. The Hoosers just rub a very little bit in the rear and it is my understanding that is normal, but I was hoping to just push the wheels a couple millimeters out.

The problem is the rubbing on the oil line. My shop says it is ok, but I would like to provide just a little bit of clearance to be sure.

Any machine shops that you know that would take my 1/4" and cut them down?

Thanks,

Why not take some easy to get 1/8 stock and make some using the existing spacers as a template or just buy a set of 1/8 spacers? I would think most machine shops would charge you more to jig the existing spacers up and mill them than a new set might cost. Then you will have the 1/4 to sell or use for other wheels if needed later.

http://www.boothedesign.com/spacers.html

i bought some 10mm spacers earlier this year from this guy. i'd imagine its cheaper and easier to buy the correct ones and sell off the wrong sized ones.

Are you using aluminum or steel lug nuts? When I used spacers on my wife's 964 with steel lug nuts I was how little stud was available! Can't tell with the aluminum closed end ones.

I'm using the steel lug nuts, but already have studs that are a little longer than stock. I've had the 1/4" spacers in the rear before.

Thanks for making sure I'm not missing something.

Love this place.
