Default Analysis of my spin at VIR turn 14, please.

Monday/Tuesday, I was at VIR with the Potomac Audi Club. It was a great event, great weather, and the run sessions weren't crowded.

Here is a video of my spin at turn 14.
http://vimeo.com/11125544

In my 3.5 years of ownership, it was my first time I spun my 951. I had offs, but nothing close to this. I was running almost new Pagid Orange pads in back, and almost new Porterfield pads up front which were represented to be the full race pad, but more likely are an agressive street/auto-cross pad.

Which of these was likely the cause:

1) - I overheated the front pads braking at the end of the back straight.
- When I pushed in the clutch to downshift just before turning right (You can see the shift indicator turn from 4 to 5 and this is the time that I pushed in the clutch), the back wheels started to lock up because the fronts were overheated and not applying grip.
- The rear brakes locked up, I got overwhelmed by the lock-up and didn't downshift into third, and the brake lock-up sent me around.

A major contributing factor was the use of different front and rear pads, the front not being able to hold up to the heat of the track.

2) - I was going too fast
- I did not brake in a straight line
- I trail braked way too much

3) A combination of 1) and 2)

4) Other

I look forward to your feedback.

I did the same at SPM in Nov at T1. I had just changed rear pads prior to the last session, same result. I will now always change front and rears at the same time, lesson learned. I did have an indication 2 laps eairler with the back stepping out under trail braking that I chose to ignore.

You dont seem to be going abnormally fast... looks like the rear brakes locked up or a combo w/ putting the clutch in. You did not release the clutch early right?

But the bigger question is WHY are you using Porterfields

Somebody was trying to unload them at a cheap price. Looks like they're going in the trash.

looks like you still had full brake when you were turning in. i don't think you were going way too fast for that turn, but like you said, you gotta brake in a straight line.

You do not need to brake in a straight line. You need to brake less the more you are turning.

Mix and match pad setups is a hard art. IIRC the 951 has even braking, why run a blend?

Just because I thought I was getting a bargain on the Porterfields. The price was right, but the pads don't match, so they're gone.

Anyone want a set of Portfields for Big Red fronts?

It's a common mistake on that sequence. The data shows you were basically on full brakes while turning-in on the right-hander. It looks like you had a quick moment of panic and then spun it.

Here's a good talk through the course:

Apparently one of us will need to give you lessons on spinning. You didn't even make it 180 degrees, and you certainly didn't take the "shortcut dance" across the grass and down the hill. I've "heard" it's bumpy out there...
