Default re-using tie rod ends

yeah, i know... not a great idea... might as well replace them while you have it apart... blah blah cheap-ass '44 owner blah

anyway, i need to replace the boots on the steering rack on my '88 944 which obviously means I need to remove the tie rod ends. anybody know of a way/tool that will minimize damage to the existing ends?

also, do you guys just go with the pickle-fork tool to pull the ends from the knuckle?

Mileage? I found a torn boot on one of the 964s while replacing the inner boot. Am going to replace both and keep the good one as a spare. Car has 140K and no record of prior replacement.

haven't gone through the book, but the odometer stopped late last year with 247k on the clock. I'm guessing she's at around 255k. like I said, i might as well while i'm in there... i'm just lazy.

Instead of using the pickle fork -- which will most likely tear the boots -- remove the tie rod end nut and then smack the SIDE of the tie rod end to jar the tie rod end out. They usually come right out.

what do you mean "side"?

do you mean front? rear? left? right? i'll still need to pull it down to get it out of the knuckle.

Any of those that you can get to. Don't forget heat or you are wasting your time. BTW that doesn't work for me. But putting a spare nut on the ord end so the end is covered, adding heat, then hitting the nut usually pops it out after a couple of hits.
