Default 914 starting problem

Bought the '70 from a guy in Towson that runs a Muffler shop. He could start it with starter fluid but it didn't have enough fuel pressure to run. It needed tires and heat exchangers as well. So now it has the exhaust fixed, wheels and tires and fuel pump.

There is spark at the cyl., fuel at the cyl. and good compression but still won't start except on fluid. It is stock in configuration.

I can't say much more 'cause it is being repaired by the tech up there but he isn't familiar with early Bosch systems.

Any ideas?

Try the 914world.com site. also search for bosh djet manuals. Brad Anders has a great trouble shooting web site.

ALso try Pelicanparts.com they have some information there as well...

try holding the gas pedal halfway down, if the auxiliary air valve is shot it won't start unless the throttle is open when cold and won't stay running without your foot slightly on the gas. when warm it will be OK

He has tried starting it with partial and full pedal without any luck.

check fuel pressure. there should be a small port on the drivers side fuel injector rail. the rail is the metal tube off which the fuel injectors connect. fuel pressure should be about 29 psi. you can make a cheap fuel pressure gauge with some fuel line, clamps, hose barb and a pressure gauge bought at home depot. the gauge is used to measure water pressure and goes 0-100psi, which is not great for resolution but cheap enough to get in the ball park. if there is no pressure, verify that the hoses on the fuel pump are on the correct ports of the pump. if they are backwards/wrong, no fuel pressure no starty. the ports on the fule pump are labeled "D" for druck or pressure; that's the outlet of the pump. there are 2 other ports for return and something else. info about all this is on pelican, 914world and 914club if you search.

check resistance between the terminals and put a vacuum (10 mm Hg) on the port. you want it to hold vacuum for about 10 min. resistance values verify the windings on the coils are not broken/open/lack continuity.
