So I make a smart ass comment on pookies' "sump find" thread a few days ago, then drop the motor in the SC today to fix some major oil leaks. Find plenty of those, but also discover that I have at least one broken head stud.

So my question now is: Do I

a: Find a used 3.0
b: Have the 3.0 rebuilt (or do it myself)
c: Upgrade to a 3.2
d: Upgrade to a 3.6
or e: Fix the oil leaks, check leakdown, and run it til I start losing compression, then do one of a-d?

Car is not needed til next DE season.

How many miles on the motor? How much $$ in the budget?

118k on the motor. Budget is not unlimited, but I can afford any of the options. Just trying to decide which makes the most sense. I have driven Alan H's SC with his 3.6, and really liked it, but not sure dropping $15K+ on an '83 makes the most sense. Maybe I could get a large fraction of the performance with 50% of the budget if I go 3.2?

Yep, sure could. Of course a used motor is a crap shoot. You can get the heads done and replace the bad stud for pretty cheap.

Only you can decide what is best for you, dollar for dollar from a practicallity stand point the 3.2l option seems to best. Seems like there are plenty to choose from.

d. looks good to me. Then keep a weather eye out for a 3.2/3.6 but drive while you refresh the donor motor. I’ve been down the “no Porsche” during upgrades road and it sucks

so would it then be bad CAR-ma?

Man you only had a broken head stud? You saw my chunks. I still haven't decided if I will go with rebuilding my 3.0 or finding another. I worry about what I might get if I have to get a new motor, but I also worry that I might not be able to save mine. I'm holding off my decision till after my engine drop in a couple weeks. Hopefully the drop and teardown will tell me just how bad it really is.

Another option I was considering was to find just a long block and swap all my good parts over, exhaust, alternator, fan, fuel injection, dist, etc. That will end up being the cheapest option I am sure. I'm thinking I might do that while I rebuild mine if it is salvagable.

Good luck man I know the feeling.

Car is not needed til next DE season.

What goes around, comes around.

Why not just repair the broken stud. You could get another DE season or two out of it. At 150k or so it should come down anyway and then you could do (a) a complete O/H or (b) install a 964 engine you found while waiting or (c) sell to one of the Dorki who could do the O/H or (d) take it to Kansas and sell the whole car to somebody young and dumb (just don't sell it around here, please). To do this you must close your eyes to the 'while you are in there', silly syndrom. Problem with this place, me included, is once you start there is no end and to do a proper O/H costs plenty.

or

You could just pick up a new 997 GT2 and blow the doors off everybody.

Brent:

I'd redo your motor over the winter with some minor upgrades. If you were happy with the performance ..... a top end wouldn't that bad to do. 118K on the bottom end isn't that high on an SC case.
