Default Emisssion question 1st post!

With the relocation of my family to NoVa in the near future, I am wondering how hard is it going to be for my 83SC to pass emissions. My car is stock except a Fabspeed pre-muffler and a GHL single out muffler. I have the stock cat that I can put back on, but no air-smog pump. Do they check under the hood?

I am very excited to move to such a Porsche freindly area!

Thanks in advance.

It depends on the emissions station. My 930 passed with a cat, but no oxygen sensor or other emissions equipment. They really can't see much under the hood and weren't knowledgeable about Porsches.

George,

From the research I did (no first hand knowledge yet), the CIS can be leaned out to the point where it can pass the rolling dyno VA emissions test, even w/o a cat. The method is to turn the idle mix screw CCW (lean) to the point where it barely runs, take emissions test and immediately turn the screw back out to where it once was. I just put on a set of SSI's and modded the engine internals a bit, so I'm crossing my fingers during emissions time.

I think there are other SC owners here who have had luck doing this.

Please post your results.

-Charlie

George, what county will you be moving to? Do a search and you'll see I found a very p-car friendly station near my house in Alexandria. The station owner has a C2S and is a Porsche nut. He's offered me his lift and parts at cost through his WorldPack acct. You can't really fudge the emissions readings, since the machine sends them directly to DMV. But, as Charlie said, you can probably squeak through with some leaning out. I'd wait until your FL registration expires before I even thought about it.

Ewww.... Thanks for the visual. I was eating lunch when I read that. For some reason, I'm not hungry anymore.

George - They lift the hood to connect a few wires for the dyno but my experience has been they don't spend any time looking. If you need it I can provide the name of the place I use in Sterling (right next to Herndon).

Richard - that's one of the best comebacks I've heard in a while.
