Default Steering wheel recovering

I never post tech stuff since I seem to never have the time to do anything. I have had the AGLA steering wheel recovering kit since Christmas 2005, when I got it for a gift. I finally sat down to work on it this past week. I basically made the same post to Pelican to update a thread when I found some great photos. I recapped it below and the links are 2 good threads with photos on the subject. (I think mine looks like bigchillcar's...the other guy's work is truly amazing!)

-----

Overall, it's not a project I would want to repeat. I used the AGLA kit from this site. I got it as a gift a couple of Christmases ago and finally got to it. I used the line that comes with the kit (until I ran out). I was not able to find the sinew from Michael's or the curved needles (Micheal's didn't seem to have either). Not sure that curved needles are a necessity, just that the needles that come with the kit are pretty damn long.

I would describe the results as "not bad", but far from perfect or like anything you'd pay for. I was most disappointed with a couple of the spokes. I like the way the leather feels.. it's soft and now a little thicker than the 25 year old cover that was on it. I will offer the following tips:

- Using the line that comes with the kit, take one piece and put a needle at either end. The instructions say to do it like you're lacing a shoe. Exactly. Don't overthink it like I did.
- Tie the line to the needles. It slips off easy and this makes it a lot easer to keep with the needles.
- I used some 3M weatherstripping glue in the red and white tube. The glue is yellow, but sticks like crazy. I used it for my targa bar and 944 shift boot. It stinks like hell, but really works. I only used it on the spokes to keep the leather in place while I stitched it. I should have run some around the perimeter of the wheel even though the leather stayed place around the wheel.
- I would usually stitch about 5 or 6 stitches and go back and tighten it up. The key is to get it tight, which is hard one stich as a time.
- I wish it fit a little tighter. A friend suggested that I soak it in water to get the leather to shrink when it dries. I haven't tried that yet, but might.

A buddy sent his steering wheel to AGLA for a recover and was very disappointed with the results. At least on Rennlist, you'll find mixed reviews WRT AGLA.

Yeah I've heard that as well even in the thread I referenced. I'm glad that I was at least able to duplicate the work at home for $0. If I ultimately hate it, I can always stitch the old cover back on (the leather was "ok" just the stitches came out) or buy a nice momo.
