Unhappy Help! Is my head stud broken?

I was changing the oil today and noticed seepage around cylinder 6 on my normally bone dry engine--man what a horrible feeling to see that.

Wishful thinking here, but does anyone know of maybe a crankcase or breather hose attachment is in that vacinity? I'm praying it is a leaking hose and not a headstud.

I'm sure you mean on the underside of the engine? The breather hose is in the "back" of the engine, closest to the passenger compartment. Often, it leaks (along with the thermostat and oil pressure sender). Oil drips straight down and is often blown back by the forces of wind as you drive and it ends up everywhere. It has been my experience that where oil winds up, is not necessarily where it came from.

Are you experiencing power loss? A valve adjustments will confirm a broken headstud.

Check the oil cooler for leaks too, the o-rings are known to leak. Just get the mystery over with though, pop off the valve covers and check the headstuds.

Good luck

correct me if I am wrong but I thought 3.2's didn't have the headstud problem.

I don't think it's as chronic as the SC's but I don't see why it couldn't happen.

I’ve talked to several shops and they are saying that more and more 3.2 are showing up busted head studs. Probably has something to do with heat cycles and age just like the original 2.7 engines. Each generation just seems to take longer to show up!

It still pulls strong to near redline.

I didn't notice it until I had poured in the oil, so I now have to throw away brand new oil in the crankcase.

Do I need to empty the oil tank too?

Drain the oil into a very clean container and save it. Some may call this penny wise and pound foolish but if you take great care in how you do it there is little downside.

I just drained a few qts of M1 into some 2l coke bottles, no need to replace clean/good oil.

Howard, I'm afraid the motor's going to have to come out.

Go ahead and order the Raceware Headstud and hardware kit. Might as well order the Raceware Rod bolt kit as well. And since you'll be in there, I'm thinking Aasco race valve springs and Ti retainers. And if you are doing rod bolts, how about some 3.4 Mahle P's and C's, and some Carrillo H beam rods. You'll most likely bump up the compression when you switch to the new P's and C's so send the heads out to Cali for twin plugging. Sure am glad to help out a fellow Dorki.
