Default Marelli Blues

In acquiring parts for tune up and carb rebuild I discovered that my "69 911t 2.0 is still functioning with the original Marelli distributor, parts for which are no longer being manufactured. Wayne of Pelican writes that the solution is to change to a Bosch Distributor. In perusing several parts catalogs my year and model isn't even listed, with about half the other year/models listed as NLA, which make me hope I'm not SOL. Any info as to a compatable solution would be greatly appreciated. Oh, In my first posting it was requested that I share a picture of my ride. Happy to comply. My hope is that soon my wife will let me drive it in venues other then just my back yard.

Unless you have a broken cap, burned up points or a bad rotor you have some time. You can clean or “dress” the points w/one of you wife’s emery boards. For inside cap terminals use some fine sand paper. Remember you are only cleaning the tips don’t remove any material. There were some rotors still available from Chathan Motors (?). Mine cost me $45 several years ago.

The only long term fix is replace with early Bosh. The Bosh distributors are essentially the same except for the advance curve, which is controlled by two small springs. The Hershey swap meet is coming up and there are always lots of early ones there. Go armed with a good reverence book and you might find an early T that doesn’t need re-curving. Performance Products used to carry them new for $600

Dave, Thanks for the tips on cleaning up my points, rotor, and cap. I sort of remember doing that to my Vega GT. Looking for a longer term solution, I would like to replace Marelli with a Bosch. Knowing what's compatable is the sticking point. Porsche continued using the Marelli on the T into '71 with the 2.2L, but used the Bosch On the E and S models, the difference being in the dwell (40 vs 38) and the advance (35 vs 30). Can one of the E or S distribrutors be modified to work? If yes, who?

Advance curve is set by the springs. Dwell is set at the points, so you should be able to “setup” most early distributors to work right in your T.

Setting the dwell = “cam angle, or dwell angle is the number of degrees through which the distributor cam rotates while the breaker points are closed. It is directly related to the breaker point gap. Decreasing the breaker point gap will increase the cam angle. If the cam angle is too small, the current will have insufficient time to pass though the primary winding of the ignition coil, and a weaker spark will result. If the cam angle is too great, the breaker points will not open far enough, they will tend to stick together, and misfiring will result. The best method of adjusting breaker points is by means of a dwell meter."

I actually still have an old dwell meter but seldom think to use it once the points are set. I set the points with the distributor out. Yes I’ve had some problems with this if I’m inattentive.
