Default 912 question

ok, so not 911, but
anyone know what the number signifies on the dash, under the pad, forward of the speaker hole on a 66 912?

the number stamped into the bulkhead in front of the smuggler's box matches the one in the door jamb.
this number on the dash is different in the last three digits.

any ideas?
thanks
kevin

kevin, on 911s, it should correspond to the chassis number. I can't imagine that it would be different for 912s. By the way, was this number written in crayon (as it should be)?

Written in crayon? Is that because of some kind of child labor Porsche used in the late 60s to put these things together?

Makes me wonder who Jim bought his '73 from:

Jim: Let me see the VIN.
Seller: Oh, uh... its right here.
Jim: Its in crayon?
Seller: Uh, yeah... that's the way it should be... yeah.. . crayon.

Perhaps it would sound better if it were called a grease pencil? Porsche used them all over the parts from the start. The 356s had parts that had to stay with the almost fully handmade tubs and they would just put the vin on all the body and interior parts.

Well, if there were ever grease pencil marks on my tub ... they are long gone. Probably exited the scene when the front clip was repaired...or was that the back clip ... matching numbers ... HA!

Sorry, no help with a '62. Could check a '66-6...?
