Long story short 2001 996 imploded on 81 and now is making crunchy sounds when trying to turn it over even with a push start. 142K IMS was done already this is much much more serious. Looking for a good shop that knows what they're doing this isn't going to absolutely break the bank.

Welcome to Dorkiphus Mr/ Mrs Drizzt (we appreciate an intro, as we're largely locals)
Bank will be broken, and there is no way around it. All the local indy shops have both raves and some unhappy customers. Here's a list of indy shops in NoVa that can help you: Auto Sportsystems Group (ASG) in Merrifield Autobahn in Fairfax Chapman in Sterling IMA Motorwerke in Chantilly Intersport in Ashburn None of the shops are cheap. Motor rebuilds are in the $20k range these days. Not sure if there are still any 996 crate motors around -- there was a big sell-off on them 15 or so years back.

All good shops listed above. Add Performance Auto Works (PAW) in Kearneysville, WV to that list. Billy at PAW is the actual machinist behind many of the rebuilds that the shops above perform. I've gotten two complete rebuilds (top and bottom ends) from them and have been pleased with the results. Not sure that he has a website, but Billy's FB page is https://www.facebook.com/search/top?...20auto%20works

So basically a lifelong NOVA resident, member Handlebar, recommended I come here. My first Porsche was a 1986 944. The car is currently at ASG and they are checking into other options for me as they haven't even given me a quote since they haven't opened it up yet beyond saying, it's shot. Mr. Drizzt works fine for now

Well, any friend of Ken's is...well I'd better not say because this is a family-friendly board. Welcome, and sorry about your 996 engine.

Try reaching out to flat6pac (Bruce) on the Pelican site. He is in your vicinity and has been rebuilding 911 motors for several decades. He rebuilt my 3.2 and did a great job- engine ran perfect until I sold it. His prices are very reasonable and he communicates very well. I think he is in North Carolina, but not certain.
