There's a 2001 Boxster S for sale with a 3.6 X51 997 engine. 911 instrument panel and apparently everything works but cruise control with the engine upgrade. Full welded cage - but more of a hot DE car than a race car. Anyone have any experience with these upgrades? Would love some feedback.

First thing I'd ask: is that a 997 engine or a 996 motor? I may well be wrong, but I didn't think x51 was an option on the 997-era 3.6L motor, only the 'S' 3.8L. However, it was on the 996 3.6L motor.
That it would be a 996 engine makes some sense, too, since I imagine the wiring harness and computer "brains" would be more compatible in the same era of car. Which isn't to say that someone didn't drop a 997 lump in there, but I imagine that is even more radical surgery and I'm guessing would be more prone to issues.

The real question is who did the swap? Several reputable shops have come up with excellent protocols for this kind of work.
If the swap was done by a good shop, and the engine and car are well maintained, you have a winner! After a good PPI, that is. Elric42 |

I'd be interested in how the throttle is actuated, could be an elegant solution or wire ties and duct tape.

More info on the car:
Current owner bought the car new. Brand new X51 996 3.6 engine installed in 2013. 10K miles on engine, 20K on the transmission, 80K on the chassis. Work was done by Protosport (an indy Porsche shop in Northern NJ). Anybody aware of the shop?

If memory serves me correctly the 996 X51 is 345 hp. A 987.2 Cayman was 320 hp out of the factory wrapper. Didn’t Matt D. already educate you on the benefits 🙃🙃🙃🙃 of a 996 generation engine, especially for DE ✌️
