79SC air pump removed
The air pump has been removed. I have not yet installed the plugs in the exhaust so whatever this system is is vented to the engine compartment. Am I running a risk operating the car with the pump out? Without the plugs in? Another question. Is it possible to remove the air pump exhaust housing without removing the exhaust system? __________________ Old Tee 79SC (asked this question on Pelican) I have the plugs but need a lift. Any ideas?

Oldtee:
I pulled the pump and plumbing above the engine sheet metal on my car. The air injectors (AI) are still in as is the "rail". The car runs fine. Pari's SC has bolts installed where the AIs would normally go and many P-car owners use the marine or Mercedes plugs after removing everything. I think it is a matter of preference but I would certainly plug them with something (not run open with AIs removed). I haven't tried to remove just the rail for the AIs (I think this is what you are calling the "air pump exhaust housing") yet. I have some SSIs and a 2-in 1-out to do so I plan on pulling the HEs, the AIs and associated plumbing allat once. Others here might know better on just pulling the rail with the HEs in place. Jase |

I don't see why it couldn't be done if you can get to the nipples. If you are going to abandon them then cut everything off at the nipples and then you can possibly get a socket on the nipple. I'd worry about breaking something off inside the head like what happens to a exhaust stud.
I'm sure others can help you weigh the risks. I would imagine you could cut the pipe off at the nipple and possibly tap the inside of what's left of the pipe to insert a short bolt. It might just work and save the risk of breaking the nipple off. (That is if there really is a risk.) Then take the nipples out next time you have the engine out or heads off. For that matter maybe just plug the other end like Jase did until that time. Let us know what you end up doing!

Old Tee, you mentioned somewehere that you bought front bearings locally. Do you still have the box aith the numbers on it and how much were they. I am not in a hurry, but do plan to do this in the near future with a break pad change.
I'm also intrested if there would be a savings on the rear bearings. I know they are pretty expensive. Does anyone have an old SC rear bearing I can use to get it matched up?

OldTee, as Jase said my setup is without the airpump and it has the bolts where the AI's go. Just make sure when you remove the bracket to put some nuts and spacers or washers to hold the case on tight. I didn't have anything there and developed some oil leaks. I cleaned everything up and put on some washers and nuts. It's a temporary fix until my neighbor fabricates some spacers for me at his work. I'll stop by this week and you can take a look at my SC without the air pump.

Pari, did you have any problem getting the Air Injector's out?

Bill, I didn't have to remove them, the PO had done it before I bought the SC. He just had the airpump and bracket sitting there so that if anyone inspected it they would think it's got the emissions equipment on it. All I had to do was remove the air pump and the bracket. I still have a couple holes to patch in the engine bay.

What I got were the races or cones. When I opened the box with the bearings that Pelican shipped I found cones with the bearings. Take a set of wheel bearings in and Applied will match the numbers for you. Applied Intdutrial Technology, 8615 Grovemont Circle, Gaithersburg, 20877-4119. I don't have a phone #.
I picked up a pump bracket and intend to cut it down. The correct way to do this is to replace the studs with ones of the proper length. William, I talked to Max. Gave him your and Pari's name as reference. We are to possibly meet this week. Thanks

I was trying to buy the parts in advance so I didn't have to run up there in the middle. Does anyone have a set of old bearings: front and back that I can get them to match?
Thanks! Who's Max? Are you home tonight? It looks like we settled the car pool a little. I'll do Tuesdays they will do Thursdays. Sat and Sun are up in the air at the moment. I think I can stop by tonight if it doesn't rain.
