I finally worked out all the details with the powder coating system.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showt...hreadid=142071 I guess I will be setting up shop for all you locals. Price will be cheap. Probably powder cost and small donation towards materials (oven propane) for the first guinnea pigs. I am set up to do any part that will fit in the oven. Max 4' x 4' x 2'.

Wicked Cool, Jamie!!!
Your results look very good and your description of the setup and the small problems you had to overcome will be very helpful to those that follow in your footsteps! The process looks a heck of a lot easier than dealing with paint.

Greg,
I should make it to the track. I am going to try and hit the VIR event in April. I just finished cleaning and painting the gas and oil tanks. Now I just have to plumb them up and rewire the trunk from painting and I can turn the key. goal is to have the motor running in the next two weeks - weather permitting. I think a number of people will be making a list. Richard already emailed his requests. Jamie

Jamie - those results look great! And the timing of your service announcement times up quite nicely with my suspension components needing some sort of coating after stripping them to bare metal... Drop me an email at jay_william@bah.com and we can talk!
Thanks Bill |

Sure bring them over and I will do them with all the other parts. Thats the nice thing about the oven. I can coat and cure many at one time.
Don't forget about valve covers. Saves labor and setup for me. Jamie

Good stuff!!! I have the same gun and a big wall oven as well as a media blast cabinet. Good idea on the foam board. I was planning a metal 2 wall with insulation type build for a big oven. let me know if you get the kinks out, I might have to go with your simpler idea. Propane heat produces moisture during combustion, is this evident and does it cause any problems? (it looks as if it does not) Would you like to swap some gloss black for some of your chrome powder?
BTW. The fumes from cure are VERY toxic! Off the scale bad and outside only! The pros have to have all kinds of osha approved ventilation installed for both the coating and curing phases.

I think I have all the kinks worked out. I was originally going to build a frame and do a metal on insulation wall. then I found this rigid foam. Works great. I don't know how much weight I can support but I think a single wheel would be fine, possibly a pair. It would be easy to reinforce the structure to support as much as you want. Maybe even a rack that fit inside the box.
I did not find any adverse affects from the moisture. I think the dry air is required to prevent clumping of the powder on the surface. I tried my hand at duplicating the yellow cad plating today. Came close but need more green in the tint. I have more chrome than I need and I don't have black. that would be an easy swap. I will load up a zip-loc and drop it by. I still have not seen the Tajgarage. Jamie
