Default 3.2 engine value???

There is a long version, but here's the skinny, I need a price check.

The motor in question is a 1984-1985 3.2, exact mileage unknown, no rebuild history, (don't know if it has ever been opened), very little maintenance documentation, but is in a car, running driving, complete from harness to exhaust. The exhaust is aftermarket with no cat, and a Steve Wong chip. No leakdown numbers at this point.

What's an estimated price for a engine setup like this?

$3.5k - $8k

Leakdown/ compression tests will help narrow that range a bit.

I've had 2 914 customers buy 3.2 in the last year for conversions. One had been rebuilt once and has alot of goodies. MAF, chip cams. IIRC he paid about 6500 for it. and I believe the other one was around 4500, good condition, bone stock, no rebuild AFAIK

Running engine with reasonable leakdown minimum $4500 unless a friend is selling it. Engine with fresh Peter Dawe blueprint rebuild (last 2K miles, no track) sold for $7K shipped (I picked it up and he gave me $500 off to $6500 without me asking for a discount). Included everything including harness and DME. Brand new rebuild might be more, as would "goodies" but I needed "stock." Might be cheaper in the long run to buy one reasonably recently rebuilt unless very low mileage.

Not what you asked but the answer your are looking for is: move along and look for a better engine.

Preferably one with known mileage and/or rebuild history, documentation, compression and leak down numbers. Do it right, do it once but you already know that

Actually, yet. I bought (and then sold in the Targa, which apparently is now driving around Bethesda!) a relatively high-mileage unmolested engine (>160K miles), but it was from a Dorki, was a very good price, and I knew both the seller and the engine (and the car it came out of). The seller even helped with the swap into my car! It was a solid engine which pulled strong, and continued to have good leak-down numbers for the couple of years that I owned it. Lots of track time and driven hard. I think these engines, like the cars, each have their own personalities and there's a lot of luck to getting a good one. If you know the seller and the car, it adds to the value (but probably reduces the cost!).

Having good compression and leakdown #s adds to the value a lot more than knowing the seller and the car. A motor can develop issues without the owner being fully aware.

unless it has a famous history. e.g.: this motor was campaigned for several DE seasons by the famous Doctor K, targa top billowing and point by finger waggling....

probably adds a few currys gift cards to the value of the motor

Actually, one of the Dorkis took a ride in that car and was more than impressed by the motor--and bought it! So there!!
