Finally sitting in the AC after a HOT HOT HOT weekend at Summit. Bman and I had a fantastic time and I thoroughly enjoyed having my first student as a PCA Instructor (shh, don't tell him he was my first!) [ok, ok, ok, I can already see the 5th grade boy comments that statement will cause!]
Got to meet the infamous }{arlequin - told him "not quite what I expected". For better or for worse? Thanks to all the folks that make these events happen. Fun times, as always, and looking forward to August Porsche Fest.

Another fun weekend indeed, despite the heat. It was busy, busy weekend from a lot of different perspectives, including a deer hit, failed clutch slave cylinder, non-working trailer wiring, loose suspension noises, and an over-pressurized gas tank. The good news is none were mine.
Thanks to Chip and Greg for coordinating the Stafford Junction event on Saturday. I had a great time with my mentee. And the kids had nothing but broad smiles at the end of the day. A bit of unfortunate carnage here & there, both on & off the track, but looks like injuries were all very survivable. The threatening rain on Sunday afternoon got many folks into a packing panic, including myself. I don't mind driving in the rain, I just don't like packing up in it. I also had a great time down at the skid pad on Sunday. Hadn't done it in a long while, and forgot how much fun it was. I managed to hold a drift about 3/4 of the way around! Cindy & I will be missing PorscheFest, but looking forward to VIR!

It was quite an eventful event, searing heat definitely took a toll on both drivers and cars, but great overall and I really enjoyed hanging out with everyone.
997 ran well on Friday, and then I got rear-ended hard by an SUV on the way home. I could cry about it, but it's a car, not a person, so I'm trying to be stoic. I'm not sure it'll be fixed by Porschefest, but we'll see. The solution may be to instead get a more visible car, like a yellow GT3 with a giant wing. I reverted back to the Cayman on Saturday, bummed about having to drive my 'backup car', but I gradually became friends again with it, and it was eventually moving along nicely, but it was overheating in every session, so I was never able to go all out for more than a few laps at a time, which was frustrating. I understand that adding another radiator will completely solve that problem. Thanks to VG, Ganoo, BMAN, and others who let me ride with them (and rode with me), I learned a lot. Some peeps with mad skilz out there! Also, big thanks to Alan and my wife's instructor, David A., who fixed her flat tire on Friday. Another illustration of the great people in Potomac, no wonder it's region of the year! |

Let’s see – yes it was hot, finding a place to cool off just added to the challenging weekend. Spent Friday learning to drove the car with the new gear ratios in the fresh box. Added confidence with each session but skipped the last session Friday after the safety briefing because the classroom was comfy with A/C. My eight year old James tagged along this weekend and he was quite the trooper. He fell asleep during the briefing and I just couldn’t drag him out in the heat for the last run.
Saturday started out fun with a nice run right out of the box. When the Co-CI tells you during the beer flag he wants a ride I tend to listen. He hopped in for the second session Saturday and it was good. Stepped up the pace just a bit and cooked the front pads towards the end of the run, was planning to come in when the session was black flagged. You know it was a good session when the CI says that he likes the way the car just drifts thru ten. A quick pad swap after lunch and we were back in business. Pushed the car a bit more in run three chasing some cars that had alluded me earlier in the weekend only to bust the transmission again Looks like the pinion dropped a tooth. The green car is not quite ready for her maiden voyage so P-fest is looking questionable at best. Thanks to all of the volunteers who put together a great weekend.

I too had fun.....particularly since this was the first time in my newer car at SP. Interestingly, while I had the car at MO and WG, SP seemed much more difficult to get into a groove. I think it is that SP is a much "tighter" track and you don't have the longer stretches where you can stay in the throttle.....here is a video of my second session on Friday......and yes, I am fairly slow.....but times did improve over the weekend.

Had a great weekend too - and in particular would like to give special personal thanks to five people:
- Tony Pagonis and John Conn for helping change out my broken clutch slave cylinder. Without them my weekend would have been done. - Alex Lunsford for picking up the replacement part and driving it up with him - Chip Taylor and Greg Seemann for helping organize the Stafford Junction visit This is not to downplay the contribution of all the other great people who made this a great weekend, but these 5 people really went above and beyond!

^ Rob L. has a 996 GT3 and I've ridden with him at SP. The way he drives it is a thing of beauty. Amazing seamless transitions between brake and throttle, superb flow all the way around the track, great car control. Corner entry speeds that make you wonder if he's going to make the turn, but he always makes it no problem. You might want to compare notes with him.

I had Tuffy ride with me and I rode with him. I think the best thing is seat time in it. Just don't need to be in a rush to find the car's (or the driver's) limits.....
