Default She is officially a Long hood ... Backdate is complete.

So after a long day driving to Philly to look at a truck I figured I would make it even longer and drive down to SoMD to work on the rsr.

I got the front hood latch cut out last night and mock fitted. Finished cutting out the extra metal today and got the panel in. Looks pretty good. I still have a few holes to plug from the zillion spot welds the factory felt the need to make .... Tried to make it as OEM as I could. So my rsr is officially a long hood .

Rear is finished with the exception of welding my plates to mock OEM look and filling some spots from drilling out welds with filler rod.

Slow and steady wins the race .... At least I keep telling myself that.

Awesome job. Even if I had your skills in making all those mods, I think I would have been awfully tempted to use the '73 T as my starting point in making an RSR.

Thanks John.

Thought about it but nice starting 73's are god awful expensive. I would hate to cut up a perfectly good long hood to make an rsr unless it was a rust bucket. Would be nice but there are fewer and fewer long hoods now a days it seems. I also wanted a later 911 as the suspension and bodies seem to be alot stronger from the factory as lessons were learned. For the 86 as a starting point the price was right and the car was mint. Hopefully I can stay motivated and Ill post more pics. Had a thread on pelican but stopped updating it.

Tito ...

Yeah, I was rocking and rolling for a while then work and driving to work on my car caught up. The beginning is easy then you start to hit the slippery slope, lol. I just got Franks old SC hood in my spare bedroom with a pile of various pcar parts that I dont want to break at the garage. I would love to see some pics of your projects progress.

I forgot that the condenser panel in the trunk will also be cut out and new steel put in and the front bumper mounts will be removed for good. Also need to put in the drivers side mount for another carrera cooler in the fender for the 3.6. Having my 73 parked next to the 86 for a while before I sold it also helped with the back date. If I had any questions or needed a second look I only had to travel a few feet. Here are a few pics of the rear where the old bumper mounts were cut out ...

I agree in the long hood thing. I think you can also cut a newer tub into the same weight class as a true longhood while spending far less for a rust free starting point.

Please keep posting updates as you go.

I cant even remember when i started...been so long.

But was fortunate that stuff i havent any experience with (welding and removing sunroofs) was already done...spent a good while just getting all the wiring preoperly connected to have the 78 engine run in an 81 sc with most of the wiring there...i also didnt know anything about how cars are wired ...so was a big event just to get the engine started( and thanks to a few on the board learned quite a bit about how a car is wired).

Then the travel and work and the family just put the brakes on the whole thing...even tried to sell it with little luck. Also the fiberglass fitting just made me less enthusiastic...but recently with a little help, change in jobs and more time on my hands...have kick started the progress again...finally started working on front boday panels and getting them lined up...will get a little help fixing fiberglass and then get teh car to someone to properly tune the engine and maybe by the spring will get it on the road...frankly its a couple of weeks of good work to do that...am just taking my time...will get some shots and get post it when i get the front connected in the next few weeks...

In a couple years or so to give myself enough time to convince the missus it's a good idea, I would love to buy someone's project. I hope you finish yours, though. Just in a couple years my hope is that I can take someone else's project off their hands.

So do I...it all started as a low end project...someone had a shell they wanted to sell, I had a 75 with lots of rust...we spent a weekend taking one apart and putting it all into the other (most of it at least)...am recovering my own dash, making my own door panels, using roll up windows...etc...its just fun...but as i learn more and more about real RSR's i am not sure i have the real intensity to make this a RSR clone...so in the end it will be more like a low weight SC with a long hood and wide flares...for a guy who 6 years ago couldnt have told you where the oil filter was on any car, have come a long way so that is of more value to me than any thing else...it is fun though...and really there is no rush...so who knows 2 years from now it might still be available...haha...better be at least running by then...smile.
