Default Airbag system fault (Cayman, yr: ??)

I live in Northern VA and have recently put in my Corbeau racing seats and have triggered the airbag system fault. I have experienced this before and have had the system fault cleared at a local shop but I am told I cannot pass the Va Safety Inspection with the airbag light illuminated (which it is even with the fault cleared). Any advice??

What car????

If there isn't a fault, the light will go out. On 996/7s the dealer can recode the airbag system to not detect seat airbags (like the GT3 seats).

On my 964 I just pulled the airbag bulb.

I'll eventually get my hands on a code reader and figure out what the problem is ( I suspect seat belt sensor), but it works for inspections.

durametric tool is "only" a few hundred bucks. that will clear airbag faults and lots more.

durametric will clear the fault, but can not recode the airbag system of pre-997s. I had to take my 996 to a shop w/ a PST2 or PIWIS (Matt deMaria) to get it recoded.

x2. All Porsche shops have PST2 / PIWIS that can reset the system for you.

Before you do that you may also want to make sure you have reconnected (including ground) the seat belt receptacles.

Thanks for all the replies. I have a Cayman..Intersport said they can clear the fault and the light..we'll see. To pass the inspection pulling the bulb sounds the best!

One more thing, when the shop resets the system and clears the fault does it shut down only the thorax bags or the entire airbag system?

If they recode the system for no seat airbags, it only disables the seat airbags.
