How can you tell if it is down or not?

Yes, Potomac web site is down. Hoster said Forum was "old" and "compromised" and so took the whole web site down. Webmaster working right now on getting it back up.

It wasn't compromised. Nobody hacked it or even came close.

The hosting provider is concerned that it's running an older version of the software. They offered up a special deal of basically $100 to fix the outdated code, or $200 to fix the code and upgrade the site.

I was trying to get it updated myself, but the upgrade scripts time out before it can complete. Support won't extend the timeout, so we have to cough up $100 to get it updated.

I'm a bit pissed about this. The software is at the latest patch for the version running and there are no known vulnerabilities.

It's almost worth bringing the hosting back to my home-based, except now instead of a 20 megabit up/down line, I'm stuck with a 15 down and only 2 up. It's hard to host much of anything on that.

I have a linux machine sitting here just waiting to do it. It was the test site for a long time. If anyone knows of a good broadband provider in Austin, please let me know. I'm about to drop TW (the only game in town apparently) and find something more like the FiOS I had in DC.

Thanks for the update Michael.

So....since you're in Austin now, how many can you accommodate for the upcoming US F1 race??
