Default Bilstein HD Assembly Question on 964

The HD and H&R reds been sitting in the garage for a couple of weeks. I ordered new strut mounts and other pieces I thought I need based on PET. I decided to bench assemble to determine if I ordered too many pieces or not enough!!!!

So the upper hat (above the spring) and strut mount do not fit over the shaft on the front strut and the big washers next to the bump stop do not fit over the shaft on the rear strut.

The car was built in 6/92 and the Bilsteins have correct part #. I did not compress the spring and did not force things, but I did try to check fitment without the spring. The diameter of the rod on the strut is too large. Has anyone else has these issues? Any suggestions? I have already called Bilstein, but I am holding my breath for a speedy reply from their tech guy. I think they only have one in the US.

You don't say what struts but it sounds like you got one that needs a different top mount. My RS struts fit the stock mounts front and rear. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o></o>
BUT if you mean there isn’t room at the top then just back off the collar on the strut. U don’t need a spring compressor to fit spring on or off 964s struts if you adjust the collar. <o></o>

The struts are Bilstein HD. F4-VE3-5277 and F4-VE3-5278 for the front L and R. Don't remember the part # for R, but it is a match for MY 91-9/93 C2. The mounts are stock based on PET for 91-. Look at the picture. The collar on the F strut is all the way to the bottom on the thread. The cone and the strut mount above the spring do not go over the shaft with or without springs.

Don't RS struts require monoball? Where did you source the RS struts? Do they work with H&R? I though they have shorter springs.

Yes but I was able to "fit them" to the stockers. HAven't lowed the car onto the tyres yet so don't know if they work. Looks like yours require a dif set up as well.

Did you take the nut off the top of the shock/insert first? Perhaps that's your problem...
