Default window stuck

The drivers window is stuck up (88 911). Got the panel off the door and looking at the inside - where the heck is the motor? Manual says to get the regulator out, first open the window halfway. Gee, thanks. Pressing the window switch to the open position, the motor draws 14A, but no joy. Now what?

Sounds like the motor is toast. Like they say it's in there! Just follow the wiring or look see where the bolt heads are on the door. Once you disconnect the motor the window will come down.

Beware, don't let the window glass drop. I can break. The motor is one that works by reversing current flow. Check it by removing from car and use a battery +/- then -/+.

Ok, the regulator is separated from the window, and the window is unbroken and taped up to the window frame. But now, the motor won't come free of the regulator. There's two problems - I can't figure out how to unplug the power connection to the motor; and, I can't separate the motor from the regulator mechanically. I unscrewed two torx screws that look like they hold the motor to the regulator - the Bentley's manual says there's three hex bolts, but I only see two torx screws. Nonetheless, the motor ain't coming free of the regulator.

With the thing in it's present state, the motor does indeed turn and the regulator goes thru the motions. I guess it's somehow jammed up and when it's all together, the motor can't move it.

Can you take a photo? Sometimes those things have a tang or clip holding them in and it's not always obvious. I like the ones in the engine, the metal bar is meant to be removed occasionally.

My 78 and 79SC require no electricity for elbow juice. Manual windows have a slight advantage.

Seeing amp draw is a good sign there is an easy to fix problem that will exhibit this symptom. Take the motor off the regulator by removing the two screws. This leaves the regulator in place and the glass will not fall. Some years use Torx type fastners, some years use hex. (as DR said the motor is at the end of the wires) 95% of the time the bottom bushing will have gotten water in it and the armature will get tight in the bushing. Carefully remove the plastic part that holds the motor-brushes. Pull the armature out then clean and burnish the end of the armature. Using light machine oil wet the bushing and felt donut well. Reinstall the armature and carefully fit the plastic top that holds the motor brushes. Carefully push the brushes back in their holders as you slide the plastic holder back into the motor casing. Be sure the black rubber seal is in the right place when you reinstall the motor. A light and mirror helps out with removal and install.

Remember "Installation is reverse of removal"

By some miracle, I put it all back together, and it works. When I say I put it all back together, I'm speaking figuratively, as in, the window goes up and down. All the superflous bits (the door panel, the trim, the map holder, the door handle, the big sticky plastic thingy) are sitting on the roof of the car. Now I have to decide whether to risk putting all that back on. The motor never did separate from the regulator.
