Question How to tighten large strut canister nut

Two years ago, I replaced my Boge strut unit with Koni inserts. I tightened the strut canister down as best I could without a torque wrench. I used white paint to mark to mark across the nut onto the strut canister body. The nut on the front left strut canister loosened a bit--it moved about a 1/8" (I put paint marks on the nut and on the body--and they are now off by about 1/8").

since it's been a while since I removed them, the question is this: how to remove the strut assembly top, tighten the freakin' thing down and put it back together without needing an alignment.

Any steps to walk me through this would be keenly welcomed. I have a wrench from my M151 military jeep that will fit over the strut rod and fit onto the nut so I don't need a smooth jawed pipe wrench--but again, there's no way to get a torque reading on this thing.

Thanks,

Russell

I suspect this is on the 911?

Since there's no spring covering it up, why couldn't you just use the really big wrench and tighten the hell out of it.

We installed inserts into Mike W's car. I recall it took a Marine to break the nuts off (and nearly ripped my workbench free from the wall in the process). I can't recall how we reinstalled it.

Steve,

Yes, it's my 911... I can't get the wrench on it without slipping it over the main strut shaft... which means I have to remove the shaft nut by the camber plate. I also need to get the metal (plastic??) guard cover off so I can get to the canister nut.

today is a good day to tear into it once I know what I need to do.
