Default Batteries.com scam

About a year ago I ordered a specialty battery from Batteries.com - about $5.00... A year (actually 13 months) go by, and today I noticed a $10 charge on my discover card bill for reservationrewards.com. As far back as I looked, there was this $10 charge - for a service I never used. I called reservationrewards.com's number up, and sure enough, when I bought that battery, unbeknownst to me, batteries.com signed me up for reservationrewards.com, and charged my credit card $10 a month.

So I dug in and started asking questions, and they eventually agreed to refund 13 $10 payments to my credit card account. Unbelievable - anyone else ever get hit by this? I normally sort my bill online by $ amount and look at the top of the bill, never got down to the $10 level before, I guess.

Bob,

I experienced the same thing with shutterfly.com. Or maybe it was snapfish.com. Anyway, I, too, saw that charge. I inadvertantly signed up for it thinking that it was a frequent buyer program like a Staples Rewards. The company removed all charges after I suggested they do so.

Thanks for the heads-up on battery.com.

More than likely there was a small check box in your purchase flow giving you some sort of free trial and then the courtesy of being auto billed until you figure it out. Sadly this is commonplace with online companies as well as telemarketing companies. Watch out for any purchases on ticketmaster as they've been known to do this as well. I personally despise this method of doing business but it drives big bucks to both companies. I've worked at a few online companies in customer acquisition roles and I've seen the worst of the worst with this crap and the people that get paid a lot of money to deceive consumers.

I have used shutterfly.com without any problem.
