Default Heat

I know that this has been discussed ad nauseaum on Pelican, etc, but help me out here....

With the red levers down and the heater fan control on zero, I'm getting heat thru the vents. (whichever I slect via the red slider on the dash)

But if I switch the heater fan to 1-2-3 and raise the levers, I don't hear any fan come on.

Sooooo...the engine fan is pushing the heated air?
AND the flappers are stuck open?
AND the heater fan is shot?

Should I be able to hear that fan come on as soon as I move the switch to 1? It should be fairly loud at 3, right?

And I should hit the flappers with PB Blaster/WD 40/whatever?

I have the Bently manual, but I'm not too excited about removing the passenger seat to disassemble the heater control box and test every connection.

Pulling the levers up should turn on the fan in the engine compartment. Turning the 1-2-3 switch WITH the levels up turns on the footwell blowers. You'll know if these are on inside the cabin because they're loud.

If the levers are down and there is heat, one or both of the flapper boxes is stuck open. PB Blaster and some patience will help here. You may have to readjust the cables, which can be a pain if the adjusting bolt is rusted (which it usually is).

The engine fan not coming on could be bad fuses (fuses 1 and 2 in the engine compartment fuse box), the engine fan isn't connected, or the fan is bad. Start your troubleshooting there. If the engine fan doesn't come on, the footwell blowers won't work, either.

The footwell blowers are fused by the A/C fuse in the trunk fuse box, fuse 2. They are also relay controlled by (IIRC) the red relay in the #2 position in the fuse box. I'm about 80% sure on the relay thing; I can look it up when I get a chance.

Thanks Chris

I'll check out that engine compartment fuse and relay, and I'll prepare to spend my 4th of July covered in PB and rust flakes

To clarify as this was confusing for me at first - heat comes into the cabin when the flapper covers the holes in the flapper box. In other words, pulling the lever closes the box with the flapper. Pushing the lever down opens the flapper box allowing the heat to vent rather than enter the cabin. In my case even a very small area of the flapper covering the vent holes resulted in heat in the cabin. A slight adjustment made a huge difference.

Just too muddy the water some more… the flapper is actually inside the valve. I’ve seen plenty where the “star” is open but the flapper is not closed inside. Hot air can still poor into the cab. The top pivot seems to take more of a beating and rusts out allowing the flapper to stay open all the time.

From the BTDT book, when you spray your heater flabs with PB you are in for an interesting smell in the cabin. Nothing opens up the sinuses like burning PB Blaster.

the middle fuse on the engine compartment fuse block was blown, which Bentley says is the engine compartment blower motor fuse....replaced it....no joy....(Not that I really wanted to move that hot air today.)

I've read a few long threads on Pelican, and much of it was above my pay grade.

Sooooo....I'm going to try and "unstuck" the flappers and call it good. (for now)

But - I understand the footwell blowers on 87 and later are fused...so I'll see if I can find these.

And I'll try to apply 12v to the footwell blowers and engine compartment blower before deciding that the "engine compartment controller" (can't find the part on Pelican) is the root of the problem.

ok, this is a damn tight area to work in. (edit: the passenger side isn't too bad)

the paper (or whatever) connecting hoses are on their deathbeds.

the exterior doors appear to rotate freely with lever movement

sooooo....could I just cut the hoses as a temporary summertime fix? And put new ones in in November?

What's worse? No heat in the winter, or heat in the summer w/o working a/c?

and finally: are the backs of the 3 bolts that hold the flappers to the ducts accessible? or are they studs?

Some luck lies not in getting what you thought you wanted but getting what you have, which once you have got it you may be smart enough to see is what you would have wanted had you known.

ok, I seem to have fixed the flappers....at least to the extent that I'm not getting heat in the cockpit.

The under-dash blower fans and the engine blower do not, however, appear to work.

So my plan is:

Check switch on levers
test fans with current applied directly
test/replace relay in engine compartment

Look for my post in November with the "damn it's cold" title
