Default Removing the Cat violates emissions?

I was talking with the mechanic while inspecting my Jeep today. I brought up the fact that I was considering removing the cat when it turns 25 years old and no longer needs emissions. He said that to do so would be a Federal Offence even if it was older than 25 years. Or I could apply for antique tags and only drive in parades and what not.

Anyone heard of this? I know some of you all are running SSIs....

Yes, thats always been the case. 2 or 27 years old, emission equipment is supposed to be left "stock" on street driven cars. After 25 you just don't have to "pass the test" every 2 years

Not if the person inspecting your car doesn't know where it is, or what it looks like!!

Me: "CAT"?
Emissions Guy (EG): "Yeah, do you have one?"
Me: "Not sure where it is but I think it is this fat shiny thing right here with these wires sticking out of it."
EG:" Oh, okay"
Me: "Sweeeet." Evil grin creeping across my face, coupled with a slow nod.

Cop: "Why is your CAT missing?"

Me: "What do you mean missing? It's right there"

Cop: "That isn't a CAT."

Me: "It's not?!! You mean I have been driving around without one all this time hurting the fragile environment. Oh my god. I haven't really done much to this car since I got it...(shaking head now) I have to fix this today. This is horrible. Thanks for pointing this out. I will get it off the road immediately. Let me call a tow truck."

Cop: "You don't need to do that. Just get it fixed as soon as possible."

Me: "Thanks officer."

Sam,
How did the cop tell it was missing w/o looking under your car?
Or did the exhaust tip him off?

(Understand it was role-playing)

The cop knew because he saw the new Dorki sticker on the rear window. He had heard about that great Porsche club, whose members were all dedicated track junkies & just new one of their cars would have be modified
