Default Fuel Pump starts making noise after running then car starts stumbling

This is on my 1988 Audi 5000 CS Quattro.

Car started stumbling and then wouldn't run. Was told to replace the fuel pump which I did and it runs fine, until things warm up. Then the fuel pump gets louder and it will stumble and kick then shut off. I wonder if the fuel pump is getting too hot and then acting up. Should I check the grounds, fuel pump relay? Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated. These cars has CIS injection so maybe an SC owner here experienced something similar.

Thanks,
Mark

IMO, i have seen several, similar problems associated with corroded grounds, especially on German and some British cars. Never on American cars. I'd start there.

You have it confused with the Ford Pinto. The Audi will accelerate by itself into the back of the Pinto, thus causing the explosion.

Replace the fuel filter if it hasn't been done in a few years. I'm speculating a mostly-clogged fuel filter is causing your pump to work harder than designed.

On the S4 I had charcoal canister stuff get into mine because of my habitual topping off of the gas tank Noticed the fuel pump was louder than normal and caught it in time. Subsequently noticed the fuel pump fuse has some pretty toasty looking spades.

If it's cis check the fuel pressure at the warm up regulator. The pressure increases with temp. It's lower when it's cold.

Don't listen to that last post - he knows NOTHING about these cars!

Thanks for showing up and chiming in, John. For those who don't know John Behe, when Dwayne Moses co-drove my car to a win at VIR (note which driver's name wasn't mentioned with "win" in the same sentence), he felt the car was low on power. I took the car to Behe and got it back with about 20 (yes twenty) more horsepower!
